Hi,

after taking Finasterid for 17 years (1 mg every two days), wirh very food results, my wife and i are trying to have a baby for about one year. Now we visited a clinic that tested our physical status. The results of my wife were very good. My results were fine except of the spermiogram. The percentage of moving sperm were quite low.

Now the doctor recommended to quit finasterid to improve the situation of the sperms.

With the hope, that it helps, i decided to quit finasterid last december.

My hair condition didn't change so far. But i'm scared that the condition will get worse soon.

So my question is, how would you judge my situation in general and what would you recommend for saving my hair while not taking finasterid.

Thanks!

You might try out topical anti androgens, which are not supposed to go systemic and mess with your sperm count.

quit for 6 month and you should be good . However it will damage your hair unfortunately .
What is your hair situation now ? propecia worked well during all those years ?

My situation now is now i would say a norwood 2-3. thinning spot at the back and a some receeding of the hairline. I could maintain the status for almost the time i was on finasteride. I came from a 3-4 before finasterid.

When you say every two days , do you mean Monday and then Thursday and then Sunday ? What made you do it every two days ?

I'd think if you've maintained that much in 17 years on a low dose like that , your actual hair loss may not be that aggressive ! Do you may be surprised with how little you lose once coming off it .

I startet with one pill a day, after some years i reduced it down to 3 in a week and i could maintain my status despite the lower dosis.

What about minoxidil, could that help to compensate the effect of finasteride?

I think 17 years in, minocidil would definitely be a good choice, but understand its a lifetime commitment, and the gains you receive from it will not be in any way related to finasteride. id go off the drug for 3-4 months, try to conceive after the 2nd or 3rd month and hop back on once your girl is pregnant. I'd imagine in that time frame you will notice some shedding and i personally dont think you should start another hair growth stimulant that will induce another shed in that same time frame. You should start minoxidil when you're ready to start back up finasteride.

Wow more evidence of finasteride working long term. Congrats man. I would get back on ASAP as soon as your wife is pregnant to make sure you don't lose the hair that finasteride has saved all these years. Nothing can replace how well finasteride works yet, but maybe in the near future there will be an alternative.
