Hi guys,

My name is Christian - I am 19 years old and am currently have a thin hair, i.e. not much growing out of the head. I am new here.

English is my second language by the way.

There's a clinic for hair loss around the corner from my work. They offer hair laser treatment to block dihydrotestosterones that causes hair loss.

Without any treatment I will eventually become bald like my father and my grandfather.

I am just wondering if the hair laser treatment is actually effective and if it would be worth $2.8k for the treatment (6 months of a laser session per week, haircuts, pills etc)

Are there any other alternatives should I consider?

Many thanks,
Christian James

Can't help you with the whole laser story. I might recommend "the big 3" treatment, but some photos would help or maybe a norwood scale to go on?

Post pics of your hair so we can give better advice for your particular situation. All you need to stop male pattern baldness is finasteride most likely, depending on how bad your hair loss is you may want to start minoxidil too. That clinic is overpriced

All current hair loss treatments are a lifelong commitment, so if it's 2800$ for six months, assuming it works, you'll have to do it again for the rest of your life (for 5600$ a year, yay !).

Do some research about finasteride, minoxidil and ketoconazole shampoo before you make up your mind.

Hi guys - many thanks for your replies.

I have had some thoughts on this - and I haven't had a chance to take some pictures of my hair. Currently it doesn't seem as if I am having any hair loss problem but if you look closely you will see that my hair are thin. Looking from the top you can faintly see where I will become bald like my father and my grandfather (genetic hair loss probably).

I think I'll try one of the 'big 3' treatment and see how I go before I feel comfortable trying laser treatment.

Any advices though? I'll try and take some pictures of my hair soon.

Maybe a facebook profile pic will help?

At your stage of hair loss, I would start with just finasteride. 5K+/year for laser treatments is pretty steep.

Thanks for the replies guys - initially I thought the 6 months treatment is one-off.

I'll try finasteride.

Cheers

Just make sure you do your research regarding the side effects of Finasteride before starting therapy. I was on it for 13 years and discontinued use earlier this month due to the side effects, including a potential breast cancer diagnosis. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest an increased risk of male breast cancer and finasteride. It turns out my tumor was gynecomastia (a documented, listed side effect of the drug) rather than cancer, but men who develop gynecomastia have an increased risk of developing breast cancer down the road. And of course, there is the host of potential sexual side effects. Most men tolerate the drug well, and I thought after a decade of use I had escaped any potential side effects. I was mistaken. My word of caution here is to simply do your homework and be informed of the risks, if for no other reason than to be on the lookout if you do start taking it.
