1. Let's say that I apply minoxidil to a specific area of my scalp. Will the positive effects of minoxidil only affect this area, or does the liquid diffuse into the surrounding region?

2. So my understanding of minoxidil is that it forces hair into the growth phase. Does this mean that until these hairs are destroyed by DHT they will be permanently stuck in the growth phase, and thus, will not naturally shed?

1. (if you = responder) most visible effect will be on the spot of application, nevertheless other areas can be affected (even beard)
2. anagen phase will also come to an end without "dht" (due tominoxidil's synchronisation effect you will have unavoidable monster-sheds from time to time)

Pbot64, to expand a little further re your first question, you're touching on the idea of susceptibility to local versus systemic affects of a medication. The more local the action, the less surrounding areas (and indeed the whole body) are impacted by the 'drug'. This will vary by individual and some of the most common factors which determine response are:
  1. The strength, or potency
  2. The area of skin being treated: generally speaking the larger the area treated, the greater the risk
  3. The length of treatment: generally speaking the longer you use a topical, especially on a daily basis, the greater the risk
  4. Your age: young children and those aged over 70 have a greater risk as the skin tends to be thinner
