Questions About finasteride (and Its Side Effects)

So I've been experiencing a receding hairline by the temples for about 6 months, and the results are noticeable. As I'm only 24 years old, I'm considering using finasteride to halt the hair loss until I'm about 30, and then accept my fate. But when I contacted my doctor today, she told me that while she would give me a recipe for finasteride if I demanded it, she strongly adviced me to further research the negative side effects before committing to the drug. I've been reading a lot about finasteride recently, but I decided to follow her advice and I want to ask you all about some particular side effects, and if someone has experienced them (and if so, to what extent).

First of all, infertility. How common is this side effect? Has anyone experienced it? This would be a deal breaker.

Second, all the sexual side effects, including erectile dysfunction, impotence, trouble achieving an orgasm, loss of interest in sex. How common are these? I assume at least some people on here have experienced them. Please tell me if so!

My hair is still thick for the most part. It's only receding at my temples, and at this point not many people (if anyone) except myself will probably have noticed it, due to my hairstyle. However, most studies and discussions of finasteride only concern hair thinning at the scalp, and not a receding hairline at the temples. But I would be correct in assuming that finasteride, too, halts the recession of the hairline, correct? If so, I wonder if I can expect 1 mg of finasteride every day to completely halt my hairloss (once it's taken effect), or will it only slow it down? I am aware that it doesn't stop the hairloss for life and only works as long as you take the meds, but is it known to completely halt hairline recession is what I'm asking.

I'm very thankful for any replies. Please tell me all about your experiences with finasteride (even/especially the bad ones).

Also: can I expect good results from only using finasteride? I'm not interested in any meds that force me to completely change my everyday life.

EDIT: I realized this is probably the wrong forum, so I reposted it in the proper one. Can't figure out how to delete a threat though.

I have been on finasteride .50 mg for 7 months now, I started it when I was 24 also. I had minor sideffects in the beginning; ball ache , tingly nipples , watery sperm and shedding small hairs in the shower. All these lasted for a month or two and after that nothing at all. My libido actually increased, sexual function was not affected (erections etc..) . This is only my experience however , take it with a grain of salt as everyone can react to it differently.

Well I mainly did it to save money and also to see how my body reacted to it, it has worked fine for me so far , I am however open to increasing the dosage if I need to later on.

Something that has been bothering me is that a lot of websites say only 1-2% get negative sexual side effects, while user reports seem to say that these side effects are to be expected. Which one is correct?

Everyones thinks they will suddenly accept it at a certain age. I'm 30 now and it is bothers me just as much as at 21.
I definitely don't expect me to accept it gracefully at 30. My hair means a lot to me and losing it will hurt. But I don't know, this might sound silly but it feel worse to lose it before anyone around me. If I had any friends who also lost hair right now, I don't think it would feel quite as bad. I have exactly 0 possibilities of growing a beard too, so there's nothing for me to hide behind.

Have you planned if in the worst case these sides do not go even after stopping meds?

I am afraid of that happening, thats why I test myself once in a while by not taking finasteride for 1 or 2 weeks.

and I noticed that after 6-7 days of not taking finasteride I wake up with a morning wood again and the sides are gone.
wow that's great, and the semen goes back to normal as well?

@looking for hair advice Just because you notice some thinning now doesn't mean you'll be bald by 30. I first noticed slight thinning at 25 and my hair didn't change much for 6 years. Paranoia got the better of me at 31 and I started taking finasteride. I shed continuously for 8 months and NOW my hair has worsened. I don't take it anymore. I tried for a year. So remember(and I wish I had read this before starting finasteride) the meds can f*** your hair too. Make sure you NEED finasteride first otherwise your hair will end up way worse.
These drugs are very dangerous but we love our hair and take the risk. Understandably.
As far as sexual sides go I experienced low libido. Weak erections and no morning wood.
I was only on .25mg but increased to .50 for one month.

@Hairs45 After I quit finasteride my libido went through the roof after day 5 but crashed again after week 2. It's back up now after 6 weeks but it's not 100%. Trippy drug, man!

Just out of curiosity, did the thinning include a receded hairline at the temples, sort of akin to a norwood 1.5?

Thinning 1.5 sounds about right. I also have thinning at the forelock. But pictures as far back as 2009 show that thinning starting, so it took its time. I was worried about my crown for about a year before getting on finasteride but it was minor. Even now after the mahoosive shed the thinning is kind of undetectable when the hair is grown out. It definitely was a year ago.
Just relax my friend. You won’t go bald in any hurry. That’s my opinion anyway. You can easily convince yourself that your hairloss is way worse than it actually is too. That’s what I did.
Don’t take meds, it’s a hugeeee risk when you have so much hair. Trust me.

Finally jumped on 1MG generic finasteride today, similar situation to you where I’m the only one who can notice it. If I’m honest I care about my hair and decided to take the plunge. I’ll keep you updated

8 days later, update: in terms of my hair, the hairline has got whispy, thin hairs which used to be thicker. This is making it a lot hard to style!

No other side effects at all, just the whispy hair..? Is this normal do hairs tend to get thinner

It's because the millions of people throughout the world who are taking finasteride and aren't experiencing any side-effects have no reason to complain. It would drown out all the finasteride-complaints If they were all to come here and report their success stories.
