if your DHT levels get cut in half or whatever just cut down in general because of finasteride, people say this could affect sexual performance ect; well does test itself take over the role of DHT in terms of getting strong sexual performance could it be possible that people who get ED ect; on finasteride have low levels of test as well thats why they get bad effects? compared to someone who has high levels of test so when they cut DHT down the test takes over for sexual performance ???

i have no clue so im just asking if anyone knows and can explain the hormones to me

ALSO. can cutting DHT affect muscle growth?

I had low levels of test to start and didn't have sides after starting treatment

its different for everyone

Don't think anyone can provide an actual answer to this question grounded in science/facts

I had no change in gains after starting dutasteride, I actually broke through a plateau after starting it (almost definitely not due to the dutasteride)

The only reason why you most hair loss guys don't have the answer to this is because, despite how motivated most guys here seem in trying to combat their hair loss they actually do very little research of their own. The extent to which most hair loss guys go to is looking up proven treatments (finasteride, dutasteride, minoxidil & some would argue LLLT as one too.) That's about 5-10 mins worth of internet surfing... Very motivated indeed.

This is the basic version of the answer:

1.DHT is an important hormone that is responsible for a healthy masculine development, ergo sexual function.
2.finasteride has been proven to block DHT by 70% (I'm not sure if I remember this figure correctly, but it's a lot)

This isn't the whole story though because there are many other natural DHT blockers that do not have any negative side effects concerning sexual function...
How Why?

3.finasteride is an alpha 5 reductase enzyme blocker just like dutasteride and just like saw palmetto (serenoa repens-it's way less potent and milder than finasteride and dutasteride)
4.A5 is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone

This still doesn't explain why finasteride can cause ED. What's the difference when you block DHT differently? Whether through attacking the source (blocking A5) or blocking DHT once it's produced. There is a difference... see below.

5.Guess where A5 is most concentrated in the body? (mostly the skin), right down in the tip of the very organ that most effectively indicates sexual side-effects.

There you go. Blocking A5 is the most side-effect prone way to block DHT in the body however the most effective unfortunately. That is why testosterone levels and DHT levels can vary even drastically and won't have nearly as much effect on sexual function as disrupting the levels of A5 can.

My theory is that the whole process of conversion: (Testosterone reacts with Alpha 5 that creates DHT) is very important and has a fundamental purpose in the body. Messing with DHT levels down river seems far less destructive (messing with the body) than inhibiting A5 directly.

And if you aren't convinced then just look up Alpha 5 reductase deficiency and you'll understand how/why finasteride, dutasteride and saw palmetto have these kind of effects on the human body, more specifically the male body.

There is also the other factor of how long it lasts in your body.
Take resveratrol for instance: The body effectively breaks it down and flushes it of your system within 30 minutes of ingestion, it is proven to be 6X more effective in blocking DHT but it only does it for 30 minutes.
finasteride has a half life of (internet sources vary and it's between 4-8 hours). Basically 1mg, which is the recommended daily dose, will be out of your system by the end of the day (it remains effective in your blood stream for many hours compared to just 30 mins like resveratrol).

You're putting your body out of balance effectively for the the better part of an entire day. Most land based antioxidants such as resveratrol last a very short while in the body. This would explain why there are no reported sexual side-effects with the use of resveratrol, even in very high dosages (100-300 mg daily).

I've heard of side-effects concerning muscle gain but not much. ED is the one everyone hears about the most. I don't use finasteride but I'm experimenting with a bunch of herbs (trying to combat hair loss through a more eastern means-I know it sounds stupid and maybe you're right but I will never take finasteride or dutasteride, saw palmetto is mild enough for me to take without any sides and so are all the other herbs such as Ginseng, Nettle root, pygeum, resveratrol, black tea, green tea + isoflavanoids (soy) and a long list of others.)

Eastern medicine seems to think about how different ingredients work together in synergy and try to keep the body in balance by using many different herbs that have a similar function... Therefore minimising the dosage of each so that when combined they may be very effective.

Western medicine created finasteride & dutasteride in an attempt to bulldoze through hair loss. Look at the BIG3... basically it's only effective at best for those that have mild hair loss.
(By mild hair loss I mean they would never progress past a NW3 in their lifetime.)

If you have male pattern baldness you "should" know all of this already.

Don't read this previous post by Assassin, it's mostly full of garbage, and he slips in a few extra fake facts to try to prove his point. Whenever someone starts to spew the "eastern medicine is superior than western medicine poison" garbage I tend to just tune them out. I won't get into all of the details but rather just answer your questions:

Cutting down your DHT significantly can effect your sexual performance. For many people this is an initial, transient effect, and your body levels out after 1 or several weeks. Meaning after being on the drug for a little while, it no longer effects your ability to maintain an erection. The initial kick can be jarring, but for many it goes away rather quickly.

As far as muscle growth is concerned, cutting down your DHT won't do anything. Testosterone is mostly responsible for muscle growth, not DHT. 5-alpha-reducstase has a small presence in skeletal muscle tissue. However, some people repots that it is harder to cut down and get that "ripped" look while they are on Finasteride because it is harder to lose fat. As far as pure muscle gains though, don't worry about it.

If you have more questions I suggest reading stickies on the forum, using the search function, and just harnessing the pure power of Google to get started. If you have specific questions that you can't seem to get answered feel free to post here or start another thread. Good luck, happy hunting!

I think you're incorrect in your statement concerning the half life of finasteride, I could be wrong but I don't think it's 4-8 hours as you claim but more like 17.

Secondly, finasteride and dutasteride were not "created in an attempt to bulldoze through hair loss. " as you claimed. These medications served other purposes relating to the prostate, their regrowth/preservation qualities were discovered later.

Good luck treating male pattern baldness with your herbs and spices, can't wait to see your success story.

The thing I don't understand is if DHT has no effect on the muscles, and I read the studies that says that it doesn't, then why is it that all professional bodybuilders take DHT drugs? Usually around competition time? Some people claim that DHT give muscles the harder veiny look. Or maybe it just helps burn fat while retaining the muscle mass.

Most body builders use dht drugs because they don't convert to estrogen and they are the most powerful steroids . Dht plays a big role in strength not much for muscle. I love running tren that stuff is great .

Assassin, I have been on a regime of Finasteride for over 2 years now, and have seen a definite stop in hair loss and a thickening of the topic regions like temples and the crown, to the point where I am happy with how my hair looks and feels. I am 24 and did not experience severe loss but I acted fairly quickly when it started. I hadn't noticed any problems with ED or any other side effects for the duration of my use of finasteride, however, I occasionally felt it was affecting my moods but it wasn't constant in any form, so I presume it was just a scapegoat. Recently however, I have felt that I my ability to get and maintain an erection has been impacted. This presence of any ED seems most apparent with the fact that I no longer/rarely get morning wood, which is a key question asked by doctor's regarding ED.

I have always been interested in the natural methods of eastern medicine, yet obviously sceptical. I have read treatment lists similar to the one you listed in this forum, and was wondering if you had had any success or suggestions for someone looking for a more natural route (no pun intended). Any information would be greatly appreciated, and regardless of whether your information on finasteride, minoxidil, and their affects on DHT and testosterone are correct, i'm sure forum members would be extremely interested in the results of your trials with eastern medicine.

Thanks,

Sam.

Everything in your statement is true except for the whole strength/muscle correlation. Muscle does equate to strength. You're getting confused with different gym training styles. Yes some skinnier guys are really strong because they train specifically with high reps and lower weight and it does take longer to build muscle this way but the final outcome is far more leaner/tougher/refined muscle fiber and an insane power to weight ratio, ultimately they can never be as strong as a body builder though. The usual body building gym routine that most people are familiar with is all about hypotrophy (gaining muscle), to gain muscle as fast as possible and that's also why it degrades the fastest if you don't eat properly or lay off the gym for a while.

That fact is that unless you're a professional body builder or a long time gym fanatic (you wouldn't qualify if you've never got past 85kg with 3% body fat) you wouldn't really tell if you're DHT blocking regimen actually has an effect on your gains. It takes years for that ultimate mind/body connection. I don't think it effects it enough to be a problem for the average gym goer.

As for your quote "most body builders use DHT drugs". That is still true but have you also heard that many also take Nettle root extract to increase free testosterone, but here's the kicker... It's a very powerful DHT blocker as well.

Nettle root is not an alpha 5 blocker like finasteride (it blocks DHT down river, once it's made) and so far everything that seems to cause sexual sides is an alpha 5 blocker but as a lot of guys like zzzzz have not experienced any gym issues while on finasteride or dutasteride then it narrows it down to just Testosterone as far as gaining muscle is concerned. What I'm saying is that as long as you've got a healthy level of free testosterone your system you're body is still in 100% good shape to do what it needs, thus gym should be no problem.

For muscle gain specifically it seems that Testosterone is the key element as both DHT blockers and Alpha 5 blockers don't alter it's levels much.

Get buff and enjoy the image. Gym also increases blood circulation so it's good for your hair as well. That's killing two birds with one stone. Good luck

It's 5-alpha reductase enzyme inhibitors, not Alpha 5 blockers.

On topic, DHT does not affect muscular hypertrophy, since it gets deactivated inside muscle tissue by a specific enzyme.

We know this is true, but I was confused as to why professional bodybuilders take DHT drugs as part of their steroids cycles if DHT is completely inactive in the muscles. Another poster said that it increases strength. Do you know if this is true? If yes how does it increase strength without affecting the muscles?
