hey just a quick question for all u weight lifting experts.....or even non experts. does lifting weights make your neck bigger? i feel that when i do various weight lifting excercises, i strain my neck when i try to pick up something heavy and i feel as if it is making my neck bigger (wider) but i dunno if its just my imagination or not. do any of you know if this is true? and if it is true, is there a way i can reduce this? thanks guys

it might a small amount. mine did not seem to get much bigger. if your neck gets bigger because you work your arms, that means the gain is needed to support them at the base. don't worry. most guys with big traps have them because they worked those muscles specifically.

i disagree with you. when you do basic moves such as sqauts, deadlifts( the king of wight lefting) militery presses you hit the traps and your nick, and yes with wight lifting your nick will get wider after a while

i'd suggest using lighter weights and working on your technique for a little while maybe. so many people go straight for the heavy weights and use shocking form throughout the lift, in quite a few upper body exercises this will mean more pressure on the traps than necessary.

i had a similar problem when i was trying to build up my delts, that my trapezius was just getting huge. so i used lighter weights and found a mirror to use so i could make sure that i was doing it all right, and it helped a huge amount.

ah, ok thanks a lot guys. i used to use light weights but ever since i saw a webmd article or something stating that if you can do a set of 12 reps then its time to move onto bigger weights because just doin the same weight 12 times wont make your muscles any bigger. so thats why i upped it a bit. but its just weird cause when i do it, i do use a mirror and do it correctly but i just feel as if im using my neck too much or straining it or something.

what excerice you are talking about is it shoulders militery press??

the idea is not in using a mirror the key to a proper form is feeling it..if you are doing shoulder militery press for example make the foucs on your elbows taking the wight up the same thing with bench press or any other pressing excersice and remember dont ever lock your elbows at the end of your movment.
