Question about long term use of finasteride

If I were to start taking Finasteride today, would the effects of using finasteride become weaker as time goes on?

For example, say 10 years down the road, will I need a heavier dose of finasteride to maintain my hair?

Is there any con to starting propecia earlier? Does this drug become less potent with continued use?

Thanks

I was on finasteride for 10+ years at 1mg. and it remained effective the whole time. My hair did thin a bit over that time, but it was barely noticeable. The sooner you go on it, the more hair you'll keep. That said, you shouldn't start on it without a thorough evaluation of the potential side effects. Altering your hormone levels is unlikely to come without a cost. I had become increasingly concerned about side effects over the past few years and discontinued use after a recent breast cancer scare. There is growing evidence to suggest a link between finasteride and increased risk of male breast cancer. I had developed a few other side effects I suspected were the result of finasteride. It turns out my chest tumor was gynecomastia (another well documented side effect of finasteride) rather than cancer, but it was enough to convince me to go off the drug. finasteride is effective; users just need to be aware of the potential costs. I'm bracing for the inevitable hair loss, but feel grateful to have skirted a potential cancer diagnosis.
