I'm totally for the buzz cut.
I did it for the first time last december and its been great for me and i've kept this style since then. Mainly because its hell of a lot easier to apply topicals like minoxidil. Another factor is that you dont see much of the hair that you might be shedding as they are so small, which takes away some of the worries( definitely reduced my worries)!

Shampoo theory is interesting but I don't buy into it...

Why were men balding before shampoo? Shampoo has only been around for about 80 years. But I have no doubt some shampoo is harmful. People put all kinds of garbage into it.

I just don't buy the shampoo theory. What about the large proportion of men who never experience male pattern baldness? Presumably they aren't all reluctant to wash their hair. What about women? What about baldness in history, before shampoo use became widespread?

Pondle...not ALL hairloss is caused by shampoo. A lot of times something else beats shampoo to the punch..
Stress
Certain medications
Disease, etc.

If you actually researched a little you would come to find out that baldness was not nearly as prevalent in past history, before shampoo, as it is now.

But do we have robust data on that?

EDIT: I should have said hair loss attributable to stress, disease etc. is NOT male pattern baldness. We're only interested in male pattern baldness here.

what about women and children?

I see many more women these days with hair loss. Go to any shopping center and look at the older women. Many have hair loss. They are lucky enough to be genetically more resistant to hair loss than men.

Children...Good question HTGT...
Here's your answer:

None of us start experiencing hairloss "usually" until we hit our 20's and now you see the posts here where it is starting earlier and earlier.

Shampoo induced hair loss has a cumulative effect.
You start out as a kid thinking you're a wonderful little citizen if you shampoo every day like mommy and tv commercials instruct you to do.

By the time you're in your late teens/early twenties you now have invested enough time and damage to start your hair loss due to the cumulative effect of shampoo.

But that's just anecdotal.

Again, subjective. There have probably always been examples of early balding. It's genetic.

Shampoo induced hair loss has a cumulative effect.

But obviously not for everyone, because there's something like a quarter of men (maybe more, maybe less - I'm not sure of the exact proportion) who don't experience male pattern baldness. So presumably they don't shampoo as much as other guys?

Pondle...You're a freak'n dream come true for the shampoo industry. I can see there's no getting through to you I'm sorry to say.

Good luck my friend....

Sorry Diamond Dave, I just can't see that there's decent evidence for your theory. There are just too many counter-examples.

I think it's fairly conclusively proven that DHT + sufficient androgen receptors = male pattern baldness, so why complicate things? The principle of Occam's razor suggests that we should prefer the theory that makes the fewest assumptions.

H is T...I buzz once a week and by day 6 I can't wait until day 7 so I can buzz.
This is because the fully terminal hairs out-pace the new crop and by day 6 I start to look a little sloppy, IMO.
After I buzz, everything looks tight and cool.

The buzz cut makes the whole head look even and makes you look like you got it together.

Another question in the mix:

Why guys with their entire head shaved still loose hair?

It doesn't matter how short you cut/shave your hair, male pattern baldness will still cause the miniturisation of follicles.

What would make you think otherwise?

Because you think they don't shampoo?
Maybe so...but shampooing since childhood has already done the damage.

Just trying to keep the "Great Shampoo Debate" going.
