Can someone please tell me why minoxidil is not recommended on receding hair lines or frontal baldness. I know many of you guys have had success with this but what is the reason that companies like rogaine advertise this?

Because it wasn't tested there, so Pfizer can't claim it's proven effective there. However, it is effective there as well for many people.

Don't worry it's effective in the front too. The FDA trials were only conducted on the Vertex so Rogaine can only make the claim that it grows hair in that one area. Same goes for Propecia
There's an article in the Dermatology Times about a 48 week study showing minoxidil to be effective on the frontal regions of the scalp.

The tests are very expensive, running into the tens of millions of $$.

...........

so it is quite effective on the frontal area and receding hair lines but my next question is how dependent can your hair become on minoxidil. I've heard by many that unlike many other unproven treatments, minoxidil has to be used for the long run unless the user wants his hair to start falling out again. If i start minoxidil than i should pretty much stay away from products such as revivogen, kevis, folligen, etc. correct???

All treatments cause dependency in the sense that if you stop them, you will lose the hair you regained on them. It stands to reason, doesn't it? I mean, the only way a treatment can generate regrowth is if it changes the conditions that led to hair loss in the first place. But then if you stop using the treatment, the conditions return, and your hair loss resumes. The only exception is surgery.

Minoxidil, finasteride and 2% Nizoral are the most proven treatments available. If you want to fight hair loss, it is a life-long commitment.

You can use minoxidil with any of those other treatments. However, if you are young and your hair loss is in early stages, you might want to add one treatment at a time. No sense in throwing in the kitchen sink when you might not need it.

This may be a dumb question but is it ok to us nizoral 2% shampoo everyday? Also is there any real difference between generic minoxidil and rogaine. Just looking for your thoughts, thanks.

That would be a double No
Don't use Nizoral 2% more than 2-3 times a week.
No real difference between generic minoxidil and rogaine.

so how about using nizoral 1% daily? Which is more effective, using the 1% more often or the 2% twice a week? Are they any other shampoo products as highly recommended as nizoral?

Will changing the brand of minoxidil used cause any adverse effects? For example if I change from Rogaine to Kirkland brand would there be any changes? What if I were to switch off every month or change brands after a year? I assume they are all basically the same and the only ingredient that is stimulating the regrowth is the minix so it shoudln't matter, correct?

Be careful with Nizoral - it can make your hair straw like. It works by killing a fungus, which everyone has in the scalp - just some people are hypersensitive to it, especially the balding. My derm told me the key is regular application (2 x week) and leaving it on the scalp for 5 minutes and massaging the shampoo into the scalp. The whole point behind Kap is to improve the scalp and leave minute traces of the anti-fungal agent to prevent kill the cause of the flaking. That's why leaving it one for 5 minutes is important - that way you kill the fungus and allow some of the active ingredient to penetrate your scalp so it can work after the application.

This shampoo does zilch for your actual hair fiber quality, actually it is not that great for the actual fibers. It kind of makes your hair straw-like if you overdo it. You need to use a very good shampoo and conditioner on your off days to maintain body and volume. I recomment a hair moisturizer for your styling needs, but this application become somewhat problematic when used in combination with Minoxidil.

Letting the Minoxidil dry after application in the morning, letting it dry during breakfast and then styling (perhaps using a hair moisturizer in combo with your styling product) does the trick best. If you need to restyle, you can give your hair a quick rinse prior to any evening touch-up, however, Minoxidil should be allowed to soak in for at least 4 hours - otherwise you are just washing it off before it can get where it needs to be. You can apply your nightly Minoxidil dose prior to bed, letting it dry before you actually lie down.

In terms of what to use, it's up to you, but I think that a conditioner or hair moisturizer is a definate MUST when using Nizoral. You really should consider using a quality product. I think Neutragena makes excellent hair care products, but also salon quality products like Paul Mitchell are excellent. Garnier makes nice shampoos, but it is definately a step down. I find that washing hair more than once a day is generally not a good idea- so you should decide when you want to give your hair the daily washing. If you swim, it probably is best after swimming to remove the chemicals from your hair. If you just work out, you could get away with a good rinse at the gym and your wash at home. Or just keep Nizoral and your other shampoo/conditioner in your gym bag at all times.

so your saying to use nizoral 2% twice a week and on the off days use a good shampoo and conditioner. I'm thinking after my kevis runs out, i'm going to by dr. lee's 5%minoxidil for the morning and a generic minoxidil for the evening (ie. kirklands). So buying the 1% nizoral isn't best for the scalp? Also when starting minoxidil, if i don't experience any itching or flaking, is nizoral still recommended?

Hi All

Finally decided to seek treatment. Bought Minoxidii 5% and a bottle of Progaine Clear Gel shampoo today after consulting my doctor.

Need help on the below:

1) It is all right to used styling product after applying Minoxidii (after it have dried)? How long do you need to wait for Minoxidii to dry before applying any styling product ?

2) Can I used Nizoral on days that I am not using Progaine Clear Gel shampoo ?

Thanks in advance.
