Propecia VS Proscar

Hi I'm sure this question has been asked but mine is a specific question (if that makes any sense). I went to a dermatologist and got a prescription for propecia (1mg). But when I asked about proscar (because the genetic form of proscar exists and there is no genetic form of propecia although both are finasteride) he was very hesitant about proscar and my young age (early 20s).

Anyway I wanted the generic form of proscar because it is much cheaper and is the same active ingredient (5mg finasteride) as propecia (1mg finasteride). So what is the issue with taking a 5mg finasteride/proscar that is not an issue with propecia?


Also another important question: I've read that shedding can occur with propecia but my doctor told me that since I am in the very early stages that shedding will not occur. I'd like to get some verification to this, for piece of mind. Is shedding likely? How great can it be?

There is no difference between Propecia and Proscar except the quantity of Finasteride in the tablet. This means if you take Proscar it would need to be cut up into quarters or even smaller sizes. For example, my sons cuts it up into about sixths. OK, there is some crumble wastage, but Proscar is much cheaper than Propecia for the same amount of Finasteride. A whole tablet of Proscar (5 mg) would not be nessecary as much smaller quantities of Finasteride work just about as well. The son who has taken it for 2 years has had very good results (caught it early with thanks to this forum) but there are now signs of the hair worsening and it has nearly reached the condition it was at the start.

It seems some do get sheeding and others don't. My sons didn't but whether this was due to it being caught at an early stage, I do not know.
