My wife and I are currently trying to have kids, and I just read the following on webmd.com...should I be concerned?? We've actually been trying with no protection for almost a year now and it hasn't happened. Could Propecia affect my sperm count, or the chances of her getting pregnant?? Any advice would be helpful:

MEMBER QUESTION:
I am currently using Propecia for hair loss and we are trying to conceive. I know that my wife should not touch or take Propecia, but is there anything else I should be worried about? Can I pass Propecia to her via my sperm?

MARKS:
Excellent question. Yes. The active ingredient in Propecia is very, very dangerous for a growing fetus and any man who is trying to father children should not take Propecia.

Something you need to know: the vaginal Ph is designed to kill sperm. When a man ejaculates, the semen clumps, protecting the sperm from the hostile vaginal environment while the semen changes the Ph to make it a positive happy place for sperm.

Have you been 'trying' to conceive? I mean, tracking her ovulation/fertility patterns? doing it in the 'window'? If so, u should schedule an appt with a fertility Dr if you are not pregnant within 18 months of truley trying.

Yes Propecia can f*** with your sperm count. It impacts your hormones and possibly alters your libido. It may not be listed as a side effect...but think about it. Your prostate is very involved in the sperm making process right? And proscar (finasteride) is used to treat prostate cancer right?

Several others will say no, finasteride has nothing to do with sperm. Whatever makes you sleep better at night? But think about it..if it's important for u guys to conceive than u would remove any unnecessary obstacle if you could..and quitting propecia should be simple.

Also, wouldn't hurt to get a sperm analysis done..see ur count and mobility.

the vagina is not "designed" to kill sperm

It does have a pH that is harmful to sperm because of its own natural fora; however, the sperm does have buffers from the Cowper's gland
and seminal vesicle which help raise the pH within the vagina.

Now finasteride has been noted to reduce the amount of ejaculate, which could be some of these buffers; however, I doubt it has much effect on lifespan of the sperm once inside the vagina. Generally, it if has been over a year, it's time to go see a reproductive specialist.
