Hi All,

I'm 34 years old and started taking Propecia 24 days ago, 1mg a day. It all started good, but in the last 3 days I can't get a full strong erection. Here is my question, what are the chances that the side effects will go away, and how much time can it take?
Also, would it be beneficial to consult with an Urologist to try and tackle this problem?

Sorry if the question is repeated, but I cracked the web and all the info states that side effects are rare and are not elaborating what to do when they do happen.

Thanks and best regards,
Eviatar

For some the side effects can subside.

However for me, ´riding out´the side effect of finasteride turned out to be the worst decision I have made in my life so far.

You're still early on man, sometimes if they are manageable it's better to ride it out till a couple months (3-6) and see where you stand there. Getting off and on is just gonna be bad for your hair, givie it a fair shot and if a couple months you aren't happy where you are in terms of side effects, then quit. I should also reiterate that this advice should only be used if sides are manageable

Would you elaborate why?

Side effects should be considered as an indication that your body is responding to the drugs. Only you can decide if its manageable or not.

Well, I guess I COULD manage the side effects for two months, but I'm afraid that in case they won't pass, it will be harder to reverse them

tough call. i would probably keep using it, and lower the dose until the sides get better. Its just experimenting though no one knows for sure how someone reacts.

Low libido hit me during week 2 and now after 4 weeks everything is back to normal. If it doesn't bother you too much then you might push it through and see how it goes after a couple of weeks...

Why not do what Dr. McGrath does?

Get off the drug. Take a drug holiday. And after some time passes, you will be back to normal, and you will feel better. Then you can try reintroducing the drug at a lower dosage, seeing how it goes, and slowly bumping it up if necessary.

This is NOT medical advice, of course. It is just a suggestion from this Dr. that I read online. It seems you are stuck between quitting all together and pushing through the sides, so I thought this advice may just be the compromise that appeals to you.

You can’t get away from this side effect in my opinion.

However, I personally think it can be ameliorated via a couple of different strategies.

1. Using a prolactin inhibitor like cabergoline will easily offset propecia’s libido lowering effects (and a lot more besides it will boost it).
2. Supplementing with Tadalafil or sildenafil as needed (but for me not needed much if I’m taking cabergoline).

Alternatively, instead of a prolactin inhibitor you could try a straight dopamine raising compound such as 9-MBC which has no sides at all and is good in many other ways too.
