Propecia only?

Hi All,

I have started taking Propecia 4 days ago. I am 36 and have a receding hairline as well as thin hair on the top.

I just wanted to know if it is necessary to be applying anything to my scalp as well or if Propecia alone is sufficient to grow new hair.

We cannot get Rogaine in South Africa but apparently you can get Minoxidil from the pharmacy.

No side effects yet...the stories out there about the long term affects of Propecia are pretty scary.

Thanks
Craig

Propecia will more than likely maintain your hair over the long term/permanently, however I would not expect significant regrowth using it alone, its really good at making sure you don't lose any more hair though.

If you want the max regrowth possible you should use minoxidil 5% liquid in combination with it. You can use it once or twice daily. Twice daily will be a little bit more effective, but a lot of people find it a pain to style their hair after applying it in the morning so you can just take it once a day before bed if you prefer that

Personally I'd wait to see what finasteride alone does after a year. You're 36 so a bit of thinning wont look weird like it does on a 23 year old!
Pictures would help to assess where you're at.

But if you want I've heard you can get Minoxidil from Dischem.

If you do find minoxidil please let me know where :) Fortunately I dont need it myself but I know people who do...

Hey Carl,

Thanks - the thinning is pretty bad and has been for a few years now. I went and got some Minoxidil from Dischem and am applying it twice a day.

So now the waiting begins.
