I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT PROPECIA AND PROSCAR ARE COMPLETELY THE SAME. I guess propecia has more chemicals in it, not only finasterid. As an old propecia user,I noticed that propecia is more effective than cutting proscar into 4.

This is wrong, they are the same drug, but given different names and different colour coatings, the only possible way you would react differently to them would be either a dosing issue or one of the colourants having an effect of hair growth.

Proscar finasteride, hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose LF, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium, FD&C Blue 2 aluminum lake and yellow iron oxide.

Propecia finasteride, hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose LF, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium, yellow ferric oxide, and red ferric oxide.

Proscar is for a serious illness (enlarged prostate)
Propecia is for cosmetic difference.

It makes MUCH more sense for them to push for and advertise propecia as that is a product that people will look for. I.e. bald people will look for products to stop hairloss or enhance the appearance of their hair.

They can't really advertise proscar for enlarged prostates as the market for this is fairly constant and it is doctors that will offer it to patients. With propecia bald people often go and seek out the doctor to get the drug.

i thought propecia and proscar both made by merck?

Yes, Proscar and Propecia are two different names by which merck sell finasteride. What made you think any different ?

Pall, you could also be experiencing a placebo effect type thing. But hey, if you think it works better then go for it. I am using Propecia (though 0.5mg ever other day) just to try and simulate Merck's trial results. Probably no difference except for the cost, but whatever.

Merck did no trial using 0.5mg of finasteride every other day ?

nah, I dont think they did. I just want to use exact same drug, regardless of whether proscar is 100% the same.

quote from my pharmocology teacher at med school:

"so this is propecia, which is the exact same thing as proscar. I guess merck just realizes that people are willing to pay more for vanity."

Sounds like sound logic to me, try and match their trial data with a halved dose and miss every other day.

I would have thought at the trial stage, before marketing and large scale production, that Merck would have used the batch materials they source Proscar from (as it was already in production) to prepare the 1mg finasteride doses.

Only on completing the trials would they have designed the little pill shape, chosen the name 'propecia' and picked a colour for their new product.

Would you all be taking Propecia if Merck did not use 'Proscar' and 'Propecia' as names but instead chose 'Finacia 5mg' and 'Fiancia 1mg' ?

Once again allow me to repeat the ingredients:

Proscar finasteride, hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose LF, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium, FD&C Blue 2 aluminum lake and yellow iron oxide.

Propecia finasteride, hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose LF, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium, yellow ferric oxide, and red ferric oxide.

Now I am going to do something I would not normally do.....

I am going to suck the coating off each pill and I would like you to tell me if there is a difference between them...

suck...suck...suck....

Proscar finasteride, hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose LF, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium.

Propecia finasteride, hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose LF, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium.

Notice anything now.....?

merck just wants to rip off us poor baldies. screw them. get the generic instead which is cheaper.
I can't understand how they can sell 1mg finasteride at the same cost as 5 mg. those bastards. how is it ethical?
