As you all may know about me, my number one weapon to not only monitoring my hair loss/regrowth, but also to keep a clean look, is to maintain short haircuts. Ranging from skin fades, zero fades, and half fades, my sides and top haven't never seen a scissor in about 3 years, since I decided to go chop chop (which at that time I thought would be for the rest of my life) indefinitely.

Well, I've had just about every person in the planet that I know (including some people in the forums) suggesting me to try to grow my hair, and see how it looks. My reaction to this? I've decided to do it. Right now I have been letting my head rest from haircuts for about 2 weeks, and I am letting my hair ride out from today on. I might get occasional trims to keep it stimulated (helps growth accelerate), and continue to let it grow to scissor length. I am going to let the hair grow out in a "blowout" formation.

If you all are not familiar with this haircut pattern, it is basically a cut that involves the same hair length all around the head, only leaving a micro blend at the side burns and back to help keep the "clean" look. Right now I have a #4.5 on the top, and a #2 on the sides. When My top grows to a #7, I am going to hold it there and allow the sides to catch up, until my entire head is a #7.

I will be taping the edges and maintaining the micro blend through the growth stages. I will keep everyone in the forum informed through pictures and periodical reports! Wish me luck guys, and more hair to ya!!!

XL, good luck.

One note from someone whose done what you've done before, so I want you to be mentally prepared:

Going from mega short hair to lengthier hair can and does give the impression of thinner density. It depends on your hair color, style, and several other factors of course, but many times, I look better after a haircut than I do before it, simply because its shorter, and somehow gives the illusion of more of a "rug". Whereas when its longer I can see down the hair to the skin much more easily.

This may not, and probably will not happen for you, but do store it in your memory banks and remember that it is just an illusion.

This is my biggest fear. I have a haircut scheduled this week and i'm thinking about going fairly short #4-5. Why would it look thicker when there is less hair on my head? I just dont get it cause i can see down to my scalp now as it is..

x's hair will look thicker cuz he is dominican or puertorican or somthing... are you white bomb?

i wouldnt cut it that short if i were you.. i mighjt go shorter like a 2 or 1 with a skin fade on the sides. a 4 clip would be either to short and make look thin and not quite long enough. if that makes sense..btw im a bit of a experienced non-profesional barber.

I am Cuban American, but as I mentioned before, the shaft thickness has no relevance to the degree of hair loss. It is only an appearance generator. I admit, my hair is very thick by nature, but it doesn't make confronting a receding hairline and temples an easier task. It only helps when the hair is fairly grown out, since it serves as a curtain to be able to cover up what is lost.

Thanks to Rogaine and other combined treatments, I have been able to re-fill my temples and now my hairline, creating a more healthier appearance without needing the long hair. The only reason that I have now decided to begin growing it out longer is because I am more confident with my new acquired level of density, and wish to have a dark head of hair, in contrast to the shave and trim haircuts I've been getting lately...

I am real happy with my results, and encourage all of you to stay on the stuff, it's only for the better...

Let's try one more time...

Well, the first time I tried doing my growout, I failed for the simple matter of getting bored of the long hair and itching, so I ended up messing around with my clippers. Now, it's a serious matter. I have not touched my hair for 3 weeks (I used to get a haircut every 3 days), and I am trying to see what it looks like long.

It will probably take about 2-3 months before I get 1-1.5 inches all around. All I know is that I am letting it all growout even and it looks pretty dense. I am now at a #2 all around. I will post pics when it starts getting longer to see if it's worth it to continue or re-chop. Has anyone else gone from short haircuts to try and grow it long?

State your stories here, and the pros/cons about it.

I have been using Rogaine 5% on my temples and hairline for an entire year now, combined with herbs such as Saw Palmetto and Grape Seed Extract. I also use Nizoral Shampoo to help with any dry scalp or itching symptoms that minoxidil may give. See what works best first, then stick to it. That's what i did...

my concern for you is from pictures i remember you having thick hair. this may cause your receded hairline to show a little more prevalent then with the shorter cuts. ive always thought that shorter sides make a non perfect hairline look better, or atleast less important, if that makes any sense. give it a shot though. 1

hey Xzel,
Did you ever go through with Project X? I was thinking about doing the whole blowout thing too, but as my hair gets longer, some of the thin parts show a little bit more. So i'm going to get a fade tomorrow.

Badass, I went through with it for a while, but then got bored of all the hair and people simply told me I look better clean cut. Fades are nice too. My hair in particular curls after about an inch, but to get a real clean cut, I always have to resort to a #2 or #3 on top. Sometimes even a #1. Sides gotta be short too to hide contrast.

Questoin about growing out hair....

Earlier in this post HairLossTalk.com said that when you grow your hair out it appear thinner. Well, funny thing is that my hair is at its longest lenght in years, I would say 6 to 7 inches long. On the front its easier to see the scalp cause the hair at the shaft is lighter in color. For some reason my hair on top is dark brown and at the shaft its light blonde. It aslo curls up really badly. I have noticed that as the hair gets longer the lighter it gets at the bottom. Could this be because my hair hasnt been cut, and does cutting your hair help the hair grow fast? Is this normal?

Thanks,
Tony

I love that quote, Tony. Carlito's Way was a great flick.

I can just imagine my hair follicles saying this, as they slowly succomb to DHT:

Can't come with me on this trip, Loaf
Gettin the shakes now
Last call for drinks
Bar's closin down
Sun's out
Where we goin for breakfast?
Don't wanna go far
Rough night
Tired, baby
Tired...

Shorter hair tends to overlap over itself and sometimes lay on itself depending on how you have it styled, which provides more coverage over the scalp skin, resulting in the appearance of thicker hair. Cutting it probably does not increase the rate at which the follicle produces hair.
