Please help me...what the hell is happening to my hair?

Hey guys, I'm sort of freaking out right now. I've been posting here for a while...I knew I at least had a receding hairline. Someone suggested I also had diffuse thinning, and so to find out what was really going on on my scalp I cut my long hair in the bathroom to reveal what was happening. I was shocked at what I saw, and I don't know how to react. Is this normal for male pattern baldness? I have tons of stress related to my generalized anxiety disorder. Is it a result of stress? What is going on? Please help. Any support you could give would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Is this alopecia areata? Or chronic Telogen Effluvium? I have noticed the hairs I've lost have had the white bulbs on them...but I don't think that means anything. Please someone tell me what is happening here. Is it simple male pattern baldness with diffuse thinning? Could something more complex be happening here? Like a thyroid malfunction? Helpppp! I've been on finasteride for a month, it's not a finasteride shed. I've had this area for a while, because I noticed it underneath my long hair but I just thought it was random bald spots and for some reason didn't think much of it.

Is my very very chronic stress responsible for this? I am not exaggerating to you guys when I talk about how chronic and awful my stress is. Generalized anxiety disorder, it's hell. I am always uptight and never relaxed, except I guess when I am asleep.

Does that look like normal balding?

Stress doesn't cause baldness (though anxiety can induce behaviors which cause your whole metabolism to go nuts).

It looks like you have normal male pattern baldness. That said, I'm not an MD. If you're really concerned, you should see a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss.

Normal male pattern baldness? That's not normal male pattern baldness, that's diffuse thinning. Rather aggressive for a 20 year old no?

Other than the side (was it always that thin?) it looks like you have male pattern baldness. Yes, it is pretty aggressive for a twenty year old, but I'm on the same boat as you.. been losing my hair since I was 15... I'm 22 now.

The part that's male pattern baldness at least...the hairline...is it NW2 or NW3?

The diffuse hair loss doesn't really fit into the Norwood scale I mean.

Ryu buddy, ride this **** out,
I am 100% sure that its a shedding, you lost so much hair in the space of 1 month, you're about to go to your second month of finasteride so HANG ON, don't stop or anything, you will thanks me in one month or two!!!!!

Go check ZeroHeat's story in the success part, this guy lost soooooooooooooooooo much hair in the first two month that was terrible, but now is a full nw1, dont give up!

Buy some concellears, put that on your scalp the morning after minoxidil, then you will not think a second about your hair. It works, during some awful shedding this technique was my best shot, it helped me a lot with the stress that a shed can cause

Bibz, I don't think it's a shed because I am pretty sure I have had these thin areas for longer than I've been on finasteride (12/11/13). I definitely have. I just always assumed they were a normal part of male pattern baldness and they weren't as big due to my long hair... When I first started finasteride I think my hair loss stopped or slowed down a lot...for instance I no longer woke up with hair on my pillow for a week or two. If shedding has begun, it only just begun in the past week or the past two weeks. I'm starting to think that I have male pattern baldness + something else...maybe telogen effluvium or alopecia areata, something maybe stress related since I am constantly under severe stress due to my generalized anxiety disorder.
For instance, here are some pics before I started finasteride:

I had no idea this wasn't normal male pattern baldness..I don't know how long those spots have been there either. I think I first noticed them over the summer, at least the one directly behind my hairline. But the most apparent thing that makes me think I have more than just male pattern baldness (which I don't doubt I have due to my receded hairline and genetics) is thinning on the sides and thinning on the back of my head. Otherwise it could have simply been (rather aggressive) diffuse pattern alopecia (a type of male pattern baldness). Now it's either DUPA or areata, or maybe even telogen effluvium? I'm not sure what's going on...but here are the weird patterns for you:
https://imageshack.com/i/f2faoyj
https://imageshack.com/i/09rtl9j
These areas of course are not typically affected by male pattern baldness...and what's going on on the top of my head honestly reminds me of what's happening on the back:

Just some strange pattern...anyway, we'll see what happens. There isn't really any treatment for areata, besides minoxidil, so... Hopefully I can make this better, and if not I'll either just grow my hair back out so I can cover it up or I'll shave my head...if I had to do the latter it would take a lot of getting used to, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. I think I have a good head shape for that.

But here's my hair before I cut it...https://imageshack.com/i/e9yjvrj I think the cover up option is certainly viable. Maybe finasteride will help, who knows? I will probably make a "Ryukil's story" thread soon so that I can keep you guys updated and I have a sort of journal for myself...

did you see a doctor?

My derm said it was male pattern baldness...but she only looked at it for a second. She didn't know about all this weird diffuse thinning and the thinning on the sides and back.

Bibz...btw...all I did was cut my hair shorter because someone suggested I had diffuse thinning.

My scalp is itchy a lot...dandruff comes out... Is that normal for male pattern baldness? Also a lot of the hairs I shed are long. I really hope this is just some kind of temporary hair loss and it grow back...the thinning on my scalp seems unbelievable.

Ryukill, for the LAST time, PLEASE stop making endless threads about yourself. Use one of the many ones you have already created. It clutters up the forum, and I'm fed up with merging them. I have asked you this before, and you have ignored it. If you don't listen this time, you're getting a one month ban.

It doesn't mean you can keep clogging the forum with needless threads. Stick to this one.
