My story of hair loss is not unique however; I will commit to paper my continuing saga for reasons both selfish and generous. First, I want help from other men experiencing hair loss whether it is guidance, advice, etc. Second, I want to then offer my sagacity to other men who are dealing with male pattern baldness. If my calling in life is to consul men through the loss of their hair then so be it. I am not happy about going bald, in fact it is really depressing me, but I have learned, through extensive research, a lot over the past year since I began losing my hair and I think I am approaching a point where in which I can help others; but first I need to either stop my hair from falling out or except the fact that I will be a bald man. So here it is…
I am 28 years old and it was exactly a year ago (April 2007) that I began to notice loads of hair falling out, mostly in the morning in the shower or when I was combing it. I was shocked at the pace of which I was losing it, something I can’t fully describe in words, but I will tell you this; if you think your hair is falling out unusually fast - when I would run my fingers through it there would be at least a dozen hairs left in my palm. When I toweled off after a shower hair would be left all over the floor of my bathroom. I don’t know if this has to do with hair loss, but my scalp would usually be itchy at the crown, I was convinced I could actually feel my hair falling out.
In August, about five months after this first began I went and got a prescription to Propecia, thinking this pill would solve all my problems. After three months on the drug I was not only not retaining the hair I had but I was seemingly losing more hair then before I began taking Propecia. I read that periods of shedding are normal within the first few months and that this is actually a sign of impending success and the drug was going to work. However, for the next three months the shedding (which I don’t know even if I could label it shedding, but rather simply my hair falling out) did not cease.
It was the end of January 2008 that I began to notice less hair in the morning or even on my shoulders throughout the day and my itching scalp was not really itching anymore. Was the Propecia finally working?
It is now April of 2008, and for the past two weeks my hair has seemed to revert to the point it was at five months ago with increased shedding and loads of hair in my shower, sink, bathroom floor, really all throughout my apartment. Now, this is where I need help. Is there still hope with Propecia, or should I give it up and save myself the $70 dollars a month? I try to eat right, lots of salmon, olive oil, peanut butter (all foods I understand prevent hair loss) and I take all my essential vitamins. How long does it take to see the effects of Propecia, are these periods of increased hair loss natural within the first year of treatment? Please help me I am real depressed about this.
