Starting around the beginning of 2013 when I was 23, my scalp would always be very itchy and flake off. it happens daily. oftentimes the skin on my chin or the area above my upper lip (as well as other areas around them) flake off as well. Less frequently, my eyebrow hair does the same (minus the itching part) and a few eyebrow hairs fall out, leaving a line through them or a plucked look above and below them. note: I'm also not an aggressive scratcher.


But my hair was still fine, until recently. the hair loss in random areas in the back and sides of my head is a recent, but quickly progressing, phenomenon (within, at most, a couple of weeks!).
They aren't areas that have itched or have been scratched more than any other areas of my hair, so the above situation could be irrelevant to what I am experiencing right now. Regardless, I'm more worried about the hair loss at random places on the back of my head and the side of my head. please help!

You're lucky if it isn't male pattern baldness, but I don't know what it is. Could be male pattern baldness, could be some kind of infection or fungus

i'm about to run to CVS...anything you recommend? I do get a physical tomorrow and will ask to be referred to a dermatologist but that could take forever.

My reccomendation - You should see a Hair Transplant doctor to know if you're not balding. If you're not balding, then you should see a dermatologist. I went to a dermatologist, she said everything is fine, then went to a hair transplant doctor, she just looked at my hair and said - yep, it's the start.

But maybe you can skip the hair transplant doctor, because you most probably do not have male pattern baldness.

yeah, all I've been finding are people have completely bald patches.

I'm about to go and get a small supply or Rogaine...any recommendations on other products?
i gotta replace my shampoo, anyway.

I've read that DUPA patients aren't good candidates for hair transplants. but that's if I even have that.

So I saw my new primary care physician for a physical today and he prescribed Propecia, Minoxidil and Ketoconazole for my face .he also referred me to a dermatologist.
The Ketoconazole is $10, the minoxidil (not covered by Blue Cross) is around $40 (I think the Pharmacist said I could get it at Walmart for ridiculously cheap, though she could have been referring to something else), and the Propecia (also not covered, since it is for hair loss not the prostate) was something ridiculous-like $240. scratch that, twas 72 (the $242 was from some harvard article about propecia i read before getting a quote).

He was unsure. It was actually just a physical examination, but he did take a look at my scalp; nothing fancy. I get bloodwork within a week and see a derm in about two weeks. one (or all?) of the tests is a fasting one, or whatever.
he thought at least one of the issues was likely to be S dermatitis ( actually, to correct my previous post- ketoconazole shampoo is for my face and scalp.) he also rx'ed me (I sort of asked for them) minoxidil and propecia, but they are too expensive.

the rogaine seemed more expensive than I've seen it going for OTC.
i see propecia is $9 at Wal Mart, but I'm not sure if I can go that route and also stay on my current plan. i'm gonna order some rogaine online since my aid just came in and, if this noticeably gets worse, bite the bullet and get the propecia.


also I have had brain embo's and radiosurgery, but the last of them was two years ago. a week after the embo's, a round, completely hairless circle would appear where they focused their x-ray when they were navigating the microcatheter. i doubt this is related, but who knows. glad i found this forum, though. will post more coherently in the coming days...I have an exam soon and haven't been sleeping much.

actually, now that I think about it-the issue began earlier than the start of 2013. I can remember my hairline occasionally becoming scaly.
