Hi all

I've been stressing now for a few months whether to try finasteride or not and I just can't make up my mind on the damn drug.

I was initially advised on finasteride by a UK based hair loss clinic. 6 Months supply. Stated the side effects but was advised it was safe and they were just temporary. Went away and thought about it, decided to go for it, signed the form.

I then put Finasteride in to Google and was spooked by the wikipedia entry with all the side effects and then sumbled across the Propecia help forums, and how people's lives have been wrecked by taking the stuff, the post finasteride syndrome and it's undisclosed mechanisms, etc, etc.

So I thought it wasn't worth the risk. Put it behind me and just carried on with enjoying life.

Ordered some cheap Minoxidil, applied that for a few days (was paranoid about it dripping on to my face and pillow etc!) before reading a post on here about it's longevity (after 2 years it becomes ineffective?) and it was best to try finasteride 1st , and try applying finasteride 6 months+ down if the results aren't positive enough..

So I ordered some cheap finasteride, which I've had for a few weeks now but still haven't taken the first pill.

I can't help but look on the propecia help forums and read about how it has seriously wrecked people's lives. It just seems to be such a risk, but I need to do something.

There seems to be quite a few people that have been on finasteride long term with no or minor side effects, which is very encouraging. But when it becomes ineffective (seems to be five years?), how do you get off the drug safely, without it wrecking everything? Coming off the drugs seems to be when people are getting badly messed up by the stuff.

Any encouragement, assurances or advice would be great.

Thanks

Personally I'd say go for it dude. If you do end up with some kind of sides (very unlikely) then you can just quit and they'll most likely go away. finasteride was one of the best decisions I've made and I wish I made it sooner. I've been on it a year and 3 months, I've had 0 sides and I feel and look the same. However my hair has thickened up and maintained really well.

I have no doubt without finasteride my hair would be in horrible shape right now. Just try it.

My sides kicked in after 5 months. I dealt with it for for a while, then I got pretty much every single side that has been reported on propeciahelp.com

My rational side says that it is NOT worth the risk. I think anyone who takes this drug is putting themselves at a serious risk.

BUt if you are greedy like I was then go for it.

I was very scared to try it. I had some minor side effects on and off that subsided pretty much by 3 months.

I seem better than ever now.

Hair is doing awesome too. Only wish I could get it feeling really thick again. I might add minoxidil soon.

i would say DONT do it

i tried it for 14 months. I suppose if i hadn't tried it when i went bald i would have already had the thought at the back of my head that perhaps it would have stopped my hairloss etc etc and blamed myself.

personally, though, ive had worst of both worlds - zero result and sides. the problem with the sides for me were that, you think you're side free for 8-10 months then other time come to the realisation that your libido has slowly declined. i only realised this at a certian point. went off it 6 months ago and still waiting for improvement. i also was lucky because most have far more obvious sides. i think this forum portrays the image that only a small percentrage of people get sides but i genuinely think that a good 60% of people who continue on it for a long term term will experience at least some kind of sides. why? because it messes with your hormones....theres no real surprise why it does give you sides if you actually look at the science behind it....sides seem almost inevitable!

my advice - try it if you think you'll regret not giving it a go. i you're really not fussed, dont do it .

Thanks people

Have spent an hour or so reading through the RU58841 thread, some interesting reading.

Also, what of Fluridil? Haven't heard of it up to now. I am just wondering how it compares to Minoxidil..

brightside, I was in the same boat as you, scared as anything about finasteride in August. 100 tablets of Finpecia arrived yesterday and I started taking them, remember that many of the men who take finasteride experience 0 side effects. Like the side effects forums says, remember that only people with problems will turn to the internet for advice so the views on the internet are very skewed.

I say try it for 3 months to see if you have any sides when you most likely won't have any continue for a year and see if it works for you. :)

Thanks..

So, a question on libido for the long term finasteride users..

Have you noticed a gradual decline in libido over the years?

it always confuses me when people are too scared to take finasteride so they take ru58841 which only doesnt have the huge list of sides attached to it because nobodys tested it enough to know anything about it.
id say go for finasteride.
