Opinions on getting off Propecia and starting Rogain

Good Day... It's been a long time since i visited the forum. I 1st came on here to see what I could do for my hair loss in addition to using Propecia. After allot of research and allot of time i decided I wasn't ready to make the commitment of using topical solutions. I have now been on Propecia for well over 15 years. It HAS undoubtedly grown hair and stopped my hair loss. If not for Propecia I would undoubtedly be bald. Although my hairline has receded over the years it is nothing I can't live with it. Which brings me to today.....

I remember years ago reading about how Propecia caused memory loss and fog brain. I have no memory what so ever! It's effecting my job, my home life and everything else. I always said it was because I have had 3 concussions in my lifetime but after doing some research it seems that memory loss may be tied to Propecia. I'm not here to argue this point as I have made my decision to stop using Propecia and see if it helps my memory.

I spoke to my wife and obviously I would be devastated if I lost all my hair in the next 8-12 months by stopping Propecia. My plan is to start using Rogaine and then stop Propecia slowly. Has anyone ever done this? If so, or if not, what can I expect? I'm fortunate to have found a beautiful wife and we just had our 1st child so I can live with the shedding and looking like crap for awhile as long as rogaine ends up working. I don't need to grow hair, i just need to maintain it. Thoughts? If it works I tried to attach a couple of pics. The way I comb my hair makes it look like I have more hair than I actually do.

Thanks for any input.

So what if stopping finasteride doesn't bring your memory back? Is there really any scholarly articles that claim finasteride can cause memory problems??? When was your last concussion?

You're NOT going to lose all your hair in 8 months, or whatever...I was on finasteride for 6 years, been off it about 4ish years now...My loss really kicked in about a couple of years ago...

...Go off it for 6 months and see what happens...ween yourself off it, that's a great idea...my head cleared up IMMENSELY after getting off that effin drug...I'm pretty diffuse now and I considered going back on it, but there's no way...I'd rather lose my hair than feel the way I did on that drug..hands down..

dude, you just don't know if your hairloss will stabilize at this point...everyone forgets, but guys do lose hair and then, for most, the hairloss just peaks and then they really don't lose anymore...

...listen, the bottom line is that your wife won't leave you if you lose your hair...don't live with that fear...you have a child, now, too so I think priorities need to come into focus here...

My last concussion was over 25 years ago but my 1st one was pretty serious. I cracked my skull open. I started to think it was the concussions after seeing all the crap about football players. I asked my doctor and she said it's not likely it was the concussion, at the time I didn't ask her about Propecia because it didn't dawn on me. If you google Propecia and memory loss there is no shortage of articles on it. This is one I found interesting.

So you went off it and didn't lose your hair quickly? I figured it would be gone within months. My dad is completely bald and I was on my way before I started taking Propecia so I'm pretty certain I will be bald if I don't so something which is why I was thinking about starting rogaine 1st.

Your head cleared? tell me more.... Right now, honestly it's like most things are a haze, I could be in a meeting at work and a day later if someone asks me about the meeting I can't remember anything that happens. This is not normal. I fear that some day I may lose my job and wont be able to get another job because I can't remember anything I've learned.

My wife already told me to stop taking it and she doesn't care and would never leave me for my hair. I just don't know what it would do to MY self esteem. I think what you said though dude. It's time to get my priorities straight and having a memory, a job and advancing my career should be ahead of having hair. My baby is 7 months old and I had to think HARD to remember when her birthday was. It's scary to feel like this... I did switch to every other day to see if that helps.... maybe I'll try it for 6 months like you said.

I've read that both types of DHT are present in the hippocampus, but also that only type 1 is present, which is inhibited by dutasteride.

Regardless, you can take something to counteract this, and increase neurogenesis, such as noopept or even smoking cannabis ;)

Smoking cannabis to improve your memory? Really? Has the opposite effect on me.

Without beating a dead horse you would be pretty naive to think we understand all that is going on in places where DHT is found such as the brain. One bad thing though is your probably going to go bald without it because to be honest propecia is really all we still have. Long list of things you can try, but without that propecia just be prepared to accept your fate.

and there in lies the problem. As I said, years ago I was on this board looking for things to try WITH propecia but aside from some shampoos I never took the plunge. Reading over these forums again it seems as though propecia is the only thing that work well, and keeps working.

After on and off finesteride for 10 years I decided to go with only minoxidil 15% and derma rolling.
Finesteride is powerful and gets results but there are other options.
I say go off the finesteride and try other methods, all discussed on this forum.
good luck

Did you maintain? Did you get your Derma roller on Ebay? That's where I got my last one.
Thanks for the info buddy... I was hoping to hear from people that have done exactly what I'm thinking of doing.
