Once or twice a day? How much of a difference?

Just an fyi, it wasn't clear what you initially were arguing Bryan. It seemed as if you were debating the definition of half life (which is clearly defined) when in fact you were simple arguing that the obviously unknown fact that the chemical effectiveness of minoxidil will be different depending on the medium in which it exists(blood, dissolved state on the scalp.

I wasn't "arguing" about the definition of half-life, I was simply asking WHICH half-life the other two posters (the ones who originally used that term in this thread) were talking about. And I still haven't gotten an answer from either one of them on that.

I agree one should be clear but the OP I believe simply wants to know how, or if, using 1 does of the recommended amount of minoxidil daily will change its effectiveness on hair growth. If this is a fact that cant be quantified then someone needs to just say that. No need to turn this into an argument of a term that in reality doesn't need to be used in this context.

I don't see anything wrong with using that term in this context, as long as you're careful to explain WHICH minoxidil half-life you're talking about. I've asked several times here and on hairlosshelp what they meant, and I still haven't gotten an answer.

[quote="somone uk":udb6z4p8]ok i get the point bryan is making but wouldn't the medicines actual half life affect how long it's in your blood (therefore how long it will work) after it's completely absorbed from the topical solution?

Which "actual half life" do you mean? Are you still referring to its blood serum half-life, or something else?
i am referring to the half life that is given to loniten...[/quote:udb6z4p8]

That would be the half-life in the blood. Obviously, the half-life in the blood _is_ a measure of how long it's in your blood! :)

...though now thinking about it the "half life" is only a model and topical minoxidil might fall out the range it's relevant so it's might be different to a topical solution where it enters the scalp in small amounts over a period of time rather than the much quicker method of an oral capsule

That's exactly what I'm talking about! The way that minoxidil stimulates hair growth isn't even exactly known, and add to that the fact that topical minoxidil sits on top of your head for an unknown amount of time dissolved in propylene glycol (try figuring out what the half-life of THAT is), then it's slowly absorbed into your scalp and remains in the skin for an undetermined amount of time, complete with an undetermined "depot effect" (try figuring out what the half-life of THAT is), while a certain amount is being absorbed into the bloodstream and circulating around the body (yes, we _do_ know what the half-life in the bloodstream is). So all those factors are happening simultaneously, and yet the poster "teddyruxpin" comes along and states with a straight face that the half-life of minoxidil is "4.2 hours", so we need to use it twice a day! Can you blame me for asking him what the hell he's talking about?? :)

can't blame you :)

and i have come about a paper suggesting minoxidil works because it's a potassium channel agonist, since other potassium channel agonists have been known to cause hypertrichosis
though i know diazoxide wouldn't be soluble enough to make a decent topical so i don't know if the research would help improve minoxidil much

seaback, how long have you been taking loniten and do you have any sides? i don't think it's wise to take it. if your head itches when you use minoxidil i can only suggest that it is caused because of the propylene glycol in the minoxidil which causes irrirations. you should use rogaine foam which doesn't have it.
