I was so clueless that I didn't even notice my hairline was receding until someone made a comment about it. Now it is all I see, as you can imagine. How bad am I and should I shave it all off?

My diet has been pretty crap lately and I got mono as well which I think was the period I lost some hairline. I'll post 2 pics from sept 2014 and one pic from 2007. Note I am worried about the top frontal bone left and right, as well as the center - as my actual temple hairline is just shaved/faded right now. Thanks everyone.

Once you start buzzing your head it becomes hard to keep track of the extent of your hair loss. That is exactly what happened to me. I was used to not seeing much hair on the top of my head, it took a home video of myself to see how bad it had gotten. With that being said, your hair isn't that bad. Treatments can help.

So should I start "the big 3"? or is that too risky that I'll lose more than I have already
The big 3 doesn't make your hair loss worsen. I'm sure some on here will say otherwise, but 99% of the time the big 3 only helps you. Minoxidil, the hair growing stimulant of the big 3, causes hair to change cycles and will likely cause a shed early on, but it typically stops after a while. Seeing as how you keep your hair pretty short anyway, that likely wouldn't be that much of an issue for you. How is your crown? Do you see any thinning? If not, it sort of makes that point I just made about minoxidil moot because that portion of the big 3 is really only designed to regrow hair in the back, not the front -- although it has been known to work at the hairline on occasion. If it's just your hairline you're worried about, I'd say finasteride and keto shampoo would really be all you need at this point to maintain what you have now -- which, in all honesty, a lot of dudes on here would give their left nut to have that much hair. If you are actually balding, you've caught it early, and should have very little problem keeping a lot of the hair you have now for the foreseeable future. See a derm that specializes in hair loss to get their opinion and a script for finasteride if you're fears of balding prove to be legitimate.

Thanks for that. I did not know the difference between the two. I do not have crown loss, but my hairline is definitely receding. I have had a total of 3 people comment on it in the last 6 months. I think I had folliculitis while having mono, which is like the hair not getting enough nutrition or some such bs. I hope it grows back because it really does look goofy as soon as my hair grows out past a 2 on the razor.

Get a profile/side view shot of the corners of your temples. it'll be easier to see that way.

A lot of newer people like to contribute their early onset male pattern baldness to something else. I see it a lot on here. "Oh, well I do have a thyroid issue." "Maybe it's because I over-wash my hair" or "I've been really stressed and eating poorly." These are not the causes of male pattern baldness. Will your hair be less healthy in some of these scenarios? Yeah, it probably will, but don't get it confused. None of that causes a receding hairline or other signs of male pattern baldness. If your hair is thinning in a pattern similar to ones shown on the Norwood scale, 99.9 times out of a 100 it's because you're suffering from male pattern baldness. We all night to ditch the mindset of, "Not me! Not yet! I'm too young!" Once you learn to accept that it IS happening to you, right here, right now...you'll be much better off going forward.
