As far as Im am concerned the finasteride has worked. I am 26 and my hair is in a nice state. Im 4 months in and Im sure Im gonna get a shed some time soon but even still Ill stick with it and hopefully Ill be back to somewhere near where I am now again.

But what Im wondering is how long does finasteride hold back the baldness. I mean I assume I will still go bald eventually. Does anyone know what the average change in baldness time ratio is?

(ie if I was going to go bald in 5 years, then how long would it take me to go bald on finasteride, assuming I take to finasteride well)

people that are not on meds are declining everyday that passes. finasteride responders are above baseline even 5 years later while untreated people have lost significant ground.

For how long it can stop your male pattern baldness, it depends on your genes and how aggressive is your hairloss, there are people that have good results for more than 10 years.

After 12 months for those on finasteride, 14% (58% placebo) will have lost hair and 17% after 24 months (72 % in the placebo group).

However, at average people will gain hair while on finasteride after two years, 11% hair increase on the top of the head, while those in the placebo group lost 5%.

So I think it is safe to say, that on average, you will last much longer if you are on finasteride than if you're not.

I have seen many reports, including myself, of noticeable decreased effectiveness of finasteride (at 1.25 mg a day) after the 5 to 6 years mark.
The good news is that you can switch to dutasteride at that stage.
dutasteride alone should get you going for a few more years.
Then you can add Flut topical.
All in total I bought 10+ years of real maintenance using the above regimen.

As you get older, the follicules will be more and more sensitive to DHT. Hopefully something new is out by then. I was fortunate enough to have those drugs become available just when I needed it, starting in 1998 with the release of Propecia.

Good Luck

hopefully if propecia maintains your hair for a good 5-6 years something better will be out by then.
