oily scalp hair

hey

it has always been that way that if I go one day without shampooing my scalp becomes very greasy, oily to the point that people ask me "wtf is that sh*t you put in your hair? ice gel?"

I don't want to shampoo daily, I would like to know if there is any shampoo for my kind of scalp so I can stay un-oily of more than a day without shampooing.

what kind of a shampoo (or other solution) should I look for bearing in mind that i'm a hair loss sufferer as well ?

You could try a 'mild' shampoo - possibly the nanogen one as its a gentle formula. I know a lot of people use shampoo's made specially for oily hair/scalp but they can be harsh and cause the scalp to produce more oil to compensate for all the oil that's just been stripped off with the shampoo. :)

That never happens! It's been thoroughly proved that the skin and scalp don't "compensate" for washing by producing more sebum. See the last item in my signature file below! :)

Hi Bryan perhaps you misunderstood, I said 'harsh' cleansing products, not simply washing. Out of interest, where did you come across this? I just typed "harsh shampoo's more sebum" - just like that into Google and the first 10 results all state what I previously said.

I also speak from experience, if I use a shampoo for oily scalp they are always designed to be harsh to thoroughly cleanse sebum from the skin, and my skin then goes into overdrive to compensate. Only when I use something neither mild nor harsh do I get a balance. :)

The degree of "harshness" or how strongly you do the cleaning doesn't have anything to do with it. Washing has no effect on how much sebum your skin or scalp produces.

bryan,

so you're saying someone with very oily hair/scalp who say uses nizoral which dries their hair/scalp out.. the body wont produce more oil that same day to compensate for the above normal dryness?

i always hear people with bad acne say if they wash their face too much, their faces produces even more oil.

Yes, that's what I'm generally saying. The only thing I need to caution you about in the specific case of using Nizoral shampoo, though, is that it may have an antiandrogenic effect on skin that reduces sebum production a bit. It's HORMONES which can effect sebum production (especially androgens and estrogens), not how much you wash your skin.

I know some people say that, but their claim makes no sense! That idea has been SOUNDLY refuted by Dr. Albert M. Kligman MD, PhD (and others) many years ago. You can test it yourself, by obtaining some Sebutape Skin Indicators (about 40 cents apiece, although I believe you have to buy them in rolls of 100 each), and use them to measure how much sebum your skin produces, under both conditions: (1) washing your skin VIGOROUSLY several times a day, and (2) not washing your skin at all. I think you'll get the same results that Dr. Kligman got! :)

i see, thanks for the info brian.

i'm just kinda worried about using nizoral as i have very fine hair, especially in my problem area (upper temples / hairline).

i use nizoral once a week right now because i sweat a lot and i figure once a week will hopefully kill any sebum/sweat buildup.. but is there any way the nizoral is too hard on those fine minaturized hairs in my culdescas?

I don't know for sure, but I would tend to doubt it.

Simply washing it off regularly is certainly the easiest way.

I've always had an oily skin and hair and if I didn't wash my hair everyday, then it would look horribly thin and greasy. I went to a dermatologist and got on accutane. It is a 4-6 month pill which alters the way your oil glands work. So far I've been on the pill for 2 months and can go days without any oil on my face or hair. It does make you very dry, but that is supposed to level off once you get off the pill.

No, I wasn't referring to "water only". It seems obvious that shampoo is the way to go.
