Recently a user issued a complaint about the phrasing in one of the emails going out to people who have a profile on the social network.
We are trying our best to make the social network *not* be just a bunch of pictures of heads. People have a tendency to make their main photo a forehead picture. After a few days we logged in and saw nothing but a bunch of bald heads. It wasn't pretty.
There are albums and blogs where people can upload photos of their hair. The main photo is what everyone see's (<---- left sidebar). We're encouraging people to upload photos of themselves, or anything else other than a picture of their head, or bald spot.
In one of the emails - sent only to people who had uploaded a MAIN photo of their head despite this request - a statement appeared:
"We wanted to shoot you a quick note about your main photo and your story.
We are really trying to get away from having a social networking site with a bunch of balding heads on it. Just imagine logging in as a new member and seeing nothing but a bunch of ugly foreheads and bald spots! Help us keep the site interesting and attractive by modifying your main photo to something better."
I want to clarify that I am actually the one who wrote this email, and chose to use that phrase. My thinking was actually to be funny. I didn't intend to offend anyone, so I apologize publicly if anyone was offended. In hindsight I can see that line sounds pretty rude. I was actually thinking that we all consider baldness to be deforming, and ugly. Not that you and your head are ugly, specifically. It was more of an expression against the ugliness of hair loss. And a slight tongue in cheek tone.
The sender - Grace Spencer - was just following my request, literally copying and pasting. She is here to help keep the Social Network rolling and looking good. We have since modified the wording of the email.
