NW7s in the family

There is a discussion taking place over at hairlosshelp.com that debates whether its worth it to try to combat hairloss if you have nw7's in the immediate family, like a father or older brother. A lot of people there seem to think that it is simply not worth it to try to get on meds such as finasteride or minoxidil to try to halt it, but its better to just shave your head an accept it even if your at an early age and perhaps still and early stage in balding.

I totally disagreed in that i thought it was worth it to give propecia and rogaine a shot even if there are NW7's in the family. People tended to dismiss it. What are other peoples thoughts here? is it worth it?

Yeah, good question... I would say that if you are destined to be a NW6 or 7 that you COULD give it a go but you most likely won't be able to avoid the inevitable. I'd almost suggest not to bother and just to shave it off early and live with it.

However it's impossible to determine from an early age if you are going to end up as a NW7, so I suppose you should give it a go.

...and I suppose I would be contradicting myself too, since the male side of my family is all heading in the NW7 direction (my father's already there) and I'm in no rush to dump my treatments... just holding onto that grim hope that even if I can't regrow hair, that I can at least maintain what I have for another 5 or so years.

*hehe* ...is it even worth it????

(yes, it is)

yeah good point, it definitely is worth it especially if you catch it early. In my extended family for my uncles (aged 50's or 60's by now) most are nw5 6 or 7 but there are a couple that still have pretty good hair, maybe around Norwood 3 or 4. If i were able to maintain what i have now which is around maybe a nw2 id be happy. I guess i might be "destined" to be an nw7 but who the hell knows for sure? If i can hang on to my hair for several more years because of finasteride and minoxidil maybe by the time my genetics start to take over HM will be successful, who knows, but that my take on it.

I have to add though, im starting to really dislike hairlosshelp.com, I started out posting there much more but a lot of people there have become forlorn pessimists, not quite the sh*t i want to hear when i just started my treatments a few months ago.

If your father was a norwood 7 then youd better be on an internal or you have no hope.I think it depends if your dad was bald very early in life or if he started balding later.I think also the length of time it took your father to bald will be important. If your fathers balding all happened in one year then i think you have no hope. But if your father lost hes hair over many years and the progress was slow then i do think you have hope for now.

yeah, Id agree that youve got less of a chance if your dad is an nw7 but id have to say that its worth the try, it will most likely delay things. The problem i have with the other forum is it seems like everyone there is just telling this guy to shave it off and forget about it, hes 23 probably nw4, that might be pretty bad but hes young and has still got hope, several success stories here are proof of that.

What a stupid advice. When you have a NW6 father (like me) it is even more important to combat male pattern baldness as early as possible. Btw. who says that you have the same male pattern baldness genes as your father?

i agree, I dont know what the hell they are thinking over there, but when i brought up taking the meds, a lot of them shot down the argument, i was pretty surprised.

if your father is a nw7 (or whatever number on that chart actually) that doesnt mean you'll be a nw7...same as if your dad has blue eyes doesnt mean you'll have them too...in both cases it means you have a higher chance. I know people where the fatehr has amazing hair, one son is slick bald, the other is ok, but not as good as the 80+ father. and the opposite (and any other combination you can think of) also happens...so disregard all that, if you feel like fightning it, do it.

use all available treatments now, slow down male pattern baldness, regrow a little ,whatever............use new and improved treatments in the future, then a hair transplant maybe then HM,who knows? its ALWAYS worth trying!

That's so retarded it doesn't even deserve a debate. If that were true then why do you think that people STILL go bald even if their father/brothers have Norwood 1's?

okay check this

my father is a Norwood 1 with grey thick hair

both grandfathers were Norwood 1s b4 they passed away

my great uncle was a Norwood 7

i started losing hair at age 22

as long as you have the gene in your family history, anything can happen. with a good mix of genetics, i could easily just go down to Norwood 3 and stop, or i could end up Norwood 7 like my great uncle.

better to be safe than sorry

What a stupid idea. If someone who wants hair MUST use treatments this is someone who is destined to be a nw6-7. All others could wait for their hair loss to stabilize and then have a hair tranplant to drop to a nice nw2. Not that i would ever advice someone this but anyway.

It's hard to determine if your hair loss really stablizes when you are on treatment though.
