Not another finasteride question

Hey y'all, so I have another finasteride question...

I'm a 27 year old male who first started freaking out about hair loss in April. I was still a NW1 at that time, but the slight recession I had noticed back in college was beginning to worsen and, considering all the men on my dad's side were bald before 30, I knew I had to act fast. It was still another 5 months (in 9/2014) however before I got on finasteride (1.25mg/day) and at that point, I was a solid NW1.5. I should also note that in addition to finasteride, my doctor also recommended that I start using minoxidil once a day on my hairline, though I decided to forgo the minoxidil because I just wasn't ready to make that kind of commitment.

In the 3-4 months after starting finasteride, my hair began shedding at what seemed like an accelerated rate, and my hairline took a pretty bad hit. Hoping this was just the "propecia shed" and not male pattern baldness progressing unabated, I continued with treatment and around month 5 I saw a dramatic reduction in shedding. The dreaded male pattern baldness itch is almost completely gone as well. The weird part is that my hair continues to get worse every day. Now I don't have any pics, but I monitor my hair very closely (as I'm sure we all do), and there is no doubt that--although the shedding has subsided--my hair looks worse than it ever has. I am now approaching month 6 on finasteride and would say that I've progressed to a NW2, which I would be thrilled with if I could just keep (with maybe some added volume up top :p). However, miniaturization along the hairline is progressing visibly, and I'm definitely experiencing some diffuse thinning as well.

I'm quite pleased that I'm not still pulling handfuls of hair out of my head during a shampoo, but should this be considered a success? Would I benefit from adding minoxidil to my regime? Is finasteride actually working for me? and will I start to see my existing hair thicken up in the coming months? Like I said, it's as thin as ever, and I don't know if I should just keep on trucking, or bring out the big guns.

Thanks for reading!
