No Hairline Recession Wispy Hair Diffuse Thinning

Hi. I have no hairline recession but my hair only on top has gone so wispy and dead. It's really dry as well. What can cause diffuse hair loss with no hairline recession? No one in my family thinned diffusely they all had hairline recession.
