Nizoral and my hair loss [Pics provided[

Hi guys, first off I just wanna say thanks to anyone who will help me out with this, its really bothering me lately.

I'm 22, and have always had a fairly mature widows peak, even at 15-16-17, it was high for my age, but I've always had a decent amount of hair on my head.

Some quick facts

My dad was completely bald by 19
His brothers the same
My mums side of the family cling onto their hair with a mature hairline
I have older cousins with full heads of hair

Now my scalp went through a VERY bad phase four-six months ago in which I had lumps on dry patches, white flaky and huge, that could only be scratched off. Unfortunately nothing worked, until my doctor prescribed me Nizoral 2%. Great! Not really. I went on to use it for FOUR-SIX months, after not reading the paper that came with it that said not to use it for that long, and that a side effect could be hair loss

I've provided a little timeline of pictures right until I started using Nizoral, as well as after:

Before Nizoral

Edit: I am aware that Nizoral can be used to treat hair loss. That isn't why I used it, as my hair was fine before it, just my scalp wasn't. Hair loss is also a side effect if used incorrectly I've heard ( and read )

After Nizoral (Four months later, last month)

I never had the best hairline, but until four months ago, I was more than happy with it.

Belgravia Center Experience

So I went to a Belgravia center in London and saw who they said was their most qualified professional on site. They talked to me about treatments before anything, and then I explained my Nizoral situation and how this has only been a problem in the last six months, she seemed to ignore all of this and continue.
Firstly the room was very white and well lit directly above where customers would sit, which really brings out the worse in your hair (scalp becomes very visible) - secondly she took two photos, one of the front/top area, and one of the crown.

She said the crown area is completely unaffected by any thinning or baldness (this is where my dad balded completely at my age) - but that there was thinning directly above my hairline and at the edges of my hairline, she concluded that it was male pattern baldness but said it is a very slow process, so would mostly take years before hair in the thinning areas is completely gone. This was good news, as it meant I can now grow my hair out and enjoy what I have left of it.

The only problem with all this is that they didn't even give me a hint of knowledge as to why my scalp is red in the areas that are thinning, even though I'm doing my best not to scracth any flakes off anywhere on my head.

I chose not to buy, as a year on minoxidil came to £780 with no confirmation that my hairline would really thicken to what it looked like six months ago, but truthfully, they didn't seem to care much about my scalp issue, and were more focused on trying to sell me minoxidil at a crazy price

My question was: Is this male pattern baldness, that coincidentally started during the time I was overusing Nizoral? Or are these the side effects of overusing such a harsh product, and will it return to its normal state?

UPDATE:

It's been a month since I originally tried to make this post, but for some reason it just won't pop up (still not sure it'll be made now..) but I've stopped Nizoral completely, results are below:

Hairline seems to have thickened, not fully, but much better than while on nizoral, sides are back to normal as is the crown which while not really affected, was still full of dead skin/dandruff on the scalp

I don't think your male pattern baldness was triggered because of nizoral. Your skin on the scalp will return to normal depending on the environment you expose it to, but I wouldn't expect your hair to grow back without taking action.

Yeah I knew Nizoral didn't just switch on male pattern baldness, but looking at the last picture of this month, and my hair in the mirror in general, Nizoral in those 4-6 months seriously thinned my hair, my hairline looks and feels alot more full with more hairs over the originally affected area, but its still a bit thin. Thats why I'm asking whether or not anyone has experience with thinning caused by Nizoral - If the affected areas will continue thickening back to normal, or will it just stay like this + further worsen as the years go by thanks to male pattern baldness

I'm not too bothered about being bald If I'm honest, my entire life I've had terrible hair (in terms of being manageable) and I've always kept it short, and recently was with probably the greatest woman I've ever been with in my worse state up top, but she didn't care one bit, and so my confidence really wouldn't be affected too much I hope

If could be that your hair thinned because of male pattern baldness.

Thats an obvious one, but to thin so incredibly bad in four months, and not just on the top of my head either but the sides too, and then now thicken back to almost the usual state, seems a bit off don't you think? The before state being without Nizoral, the thinning/thinned state being with Nizoral, and then the almost back to normal/now state without Nizoral again.

It could be male pattern baldness, my dad would have been about a NW7 right now for example, but the fact that my hairs recovering is why I'm asking about Nizoral - I've not been here long and already spoken to one guy who had a similar problem with Nizoral 2% ****ing with their scalp/hair

How many times a week you used it? I started using nizoral 2% and the product info states that you use it for max 4 weeks, 2 times a week. After that, one should use it once a week for maintenance.
And it is a bit strange that many posts here complain about nizoral contributing their hair loss, yet they get the usual response that their male pattern baldness started accidentally when they started using nizoral.

I used it about 2-3 times a week, but for 4-6 months, not quite sure exactly when I started, but I only noticed thinning when I was definitely on nizoral, and then eventually stopped when I got sick of it because I was 100% sure it was worsening my hair, my dandruff even came back, which was why I was using it in the first place, never had any hair density issues!

What I can tell you (and have provided the pictures as proof, and can add more on request) is that a month off of nizoral, my hair looks INCREDIBLY better, and feels it too. I would wake up in the morning, go to the bathroom and have to fix wherever my scalp was severely showing. Now I barely bother doing it because it looks fine, not 100% back to normal, but a month ago i was thinking of constantly shaving it because it just looked horrible

- - - Updated - - -

Just a bump to say my hairline is somehow returning to its normal state since last September - The only change has been biotin and cutting out Nizoral. I'm seeing the hairline itself which was broken at the edges, return in thickness, which is nice.. Not fully yet, but its better than before, the sides are also back to normal almost.

Dunno where I sit in the Norwood scale, but either way people have been letting me know my hairs back to normal, still have male pattern baldness most likely, its in both sides of my family, but these last 6 months were extra rough because of nizoral, I have no doubt of that anymore

Same happened to me overusing nizoral. Didn't lose hair but made it extremely thin all over the scalp the day after. Looks like you've gone back to normal. I'm slowly getting back there too.

Yeah I'm still a little thin but its recovering thankfully, hopefully both of ours fully recover. This experience has basically made me realize I should grow my hair a bit rather than keeping it incredibly short - as if I do have male pattern baldness, chances are I'll have half my life to rock a bald look, so while I can I'm going to grow it out, style it (starting by going to a barbers from now on, I normally just shave it myself) and enjoy if while i can

Little confusing but
http://www.i.imgur.com/wBwrF5x.jpg my hair here on the top is the same length as http://i.imgur.com/LkNeiTd.jpg (except the top middle two, which is an all round no.2 cut), the sides and back up to the crown are actually shorter in the first image however, but look much healthier

In the attached image above my front hair has grown slightly, but in the the two links I've provided they're at an equal length so those are a better comparison, as it shows my hairline hasn't magically healed, but theres been significant improvement in my opinion

I'm still getting flakes and slight itchy scalp, but theres no real redness anymore now that I'm using a HydroCortisone cream every night this past week - my hair does get a bit oily but atm I'm using some stupid generic shampoo anyway so I need to find one that works for me and makes my hair look decent in the process

So theres been good progress for my hair , but absolutely HORRIBLE progress for my scalp, ever since stopping Nizoral. Nizoral really helped my dandruff and itchy scalp but now that's both come back fully, It really is becoming a problem. I can't get back on nizoral because of the terrible effect it has on my hair, so does anyone know any shampoos that really work well against this kind of stuff? I'm getting T-Gel tonight because thats helped in the past.

How long did your hair take to get better mate?

It hasn't recovered completely, I think its just the fact that my hairs a bit longer my hairline is no longer noticeably thin. It still would be if I cut it with a number 2 again because I do notice scalp under heavy light - but I've always had that really.

I stopped Nizoral at the beginning of September, so its been two months and I'd say my hair has recovered as much as its going to unless I can find a cure for my scalp problem (which causes alot of hairs to break off and stuff)

And I've bought it already rantangplang, thanks for suggesting it though!

Cheers man. Wish I could recommend you something for the itch, always used nizoral myself. Made hair so thick until the day after then it went so thin! Your hair looks great atm though.

Yeah I had exactly that, atm I still look like its Telogen Effluvium but my hairs never been brilliant so no complaints, T Gel 2 in 1 should fix the itch hopefully
