Hi everyone,
This website has been of immense help to me. I have definitely learnt a lot from this website. The videos of the famous dermatologists explaining treatments and myths about hair loss, uncovering the science behind hair loss and hair regrowth was very informative and helpful.
I give my credit to this site...that now i have finally decided to do something about my hair loss and have started a treatment.
I will be 23 this october, I have been losing hair from last 4 years now.
It began with a receeding hair line at temples..although i used to comb my hair from left to right...side parting..so it was not visible. At that moment i just ignored my hair loss and thinning..thinking that it was temporary.
Then after 2 years like that...my hair was very messed and full of dandruff...i used to shed a lot when i combed or showered. Hair was everywhere in my room, my clothes, my books..just about everywhere.
Then i started shampooing. I used a herbal shampoo as it was mild...which helped somewhat. It slowed my shedding..but then my hair started to get thin. I continued shedding..and occasionally applying hair oil to nourish them. It helped somewhat..as my shedding slowed but hair got thinner n thinner. But no significant regrowth happened. Now i am almost Norwood2-2.5
Although my hair line is receeded...but vertex area is not that bad. But towards the left side of vertex...where i part my hair...there is a bald patch. Although it has hair there...but from far it looks like a patch without 1. It looks really horrible.
I had been thinking something to do. After reading this site..i started using Minoxidil 5% and then gradually reduce ..but not leave it...i intend to use it continuosly(may be switch to 2% after 4 months). I intend to use 5% 2 times a day for minimum 4 months to see where i stand. My primary aim is to fill that patch on the left side of my vertex and get some new regrowth on top of the head. Some frontal hair would be a delighting bonus. Today is my first day of minoxidil 5% application  and my hair hasnt been able to get combed n set. Its frizzed out as if i got a shock..! :freaked2:
Lets see. I am optimistic. :hairy:
All the best for u guys out there fighting with our common enemy.
It feels great to be in this forum...

I will keep my progress posted here.

2 weeks into minoxidil 5%. No such massive shedding as reported by many people on this site. Even before starting minoxidil, I wasnt shedding as such...but was not happy with my hair line.
I am really wondering should i start of with proscar 1mg or should i wait for 6 months to see what can minoxidil 5% can do to regrow some hair in the front. Sometimes I also think, did i do the correct thing by starting minoxidil first or should i had started with finasteride first. I am really confused now. I must confess, I did not take any opinion from any doctor...as long time back i saw a doctor...and he had a full head of hair...he gave me advice saying that hair loss is natural..i had nothing to lose apart from self esteem. How easy it was for him to say...considering that i am only 23.
I am really confused now and having second thoughts about minoxidil. Should i stop it...as its only 2 weeks..so no drastic effect would happen to my hair. Should i take opinion from a doctor?
Please my fellow brothers..gimme some advice.
I wud really appreciate it.

Minoxidil does not stop hair from falling out.. it attempts to shock follicles back to growth, and will provide a one off patch of hair.

Its inevitable that you will need to take some sort of DHT inhibitor, that will slow or stop hair loss from all your head, might as well start it now! Finasteride doesn't really help you regrow your head, just keep what you have..

Use both - just be sure to realise you have to use them for decades to come :freaked:

Update :

Dropped Minoxidil on 20/11 after 5 months usage.

4 months since quitting minoxidil.

Today took the plunge into Finasteride.

posted this in the other section "mens general hair loss discussions " but repeating it here.

Well, today I had went to my local GP to ask him for a referral to a dermatologist who specialises in hair loss.

I was of the opinion from these forums that GP's know sh*t about hairloss but to my surprise my local GP turned out to be very helpful.

He said I did not need to go to a Dermatologist for hairloss treatments as options were only Finasteride and Minoxidil.

He had no problems in prescribing proscar for me and asked me to take 1/4 of it every day. He also told me that he takes proscar regularly and its a very safe drug. Hes been taking it for years.

The best part was when he told me that his son was using propecia. :D

When i raised the concern about side effects from Finasteride..he said none of his patients had any sides. He also reckoned that Finasteride is a very safe medicine and it will help people with hairloss.

He advised me to just cut the proscar from my teeth and not to worry if its not perfect. he thought its better that all the finasteride goes into the system rather than going waste as a powder on table if i try to cut it.

So as soon as i got out of his clinic, I went to local pharmacy and bought Proscar finally. Just bit the first proscar pill, I think i have eaten 1/3rd of it.

I will update at month 3. :)
