New to hair loss (kind of). Should I start finasteride?

hey guys,

I have been reading and soaking up all sorts of info. from HairLossTalk.com, and finally decided to sign on and get some advice, I appreciate everything on here, thanks.

I've been loosing my hair for a couple of years now and i am currently 21 years old balding only in my temples and am a NW2. I read up on HairLossTalk.com what products to use and not to use. Not wanting any side effects I decided to go with revivogen and Tricomin and nizoral. Nothing really happened and I just had really greasy hair. I stopped Revivogen because of the greasyness after 3-4 months and kept on with Tric. and nizoral. I have been reading a lot of discussions and am begining to think that finasteride even though there are sides will do the most for me.

What advice or do you guys think. Also, how does lifting weights affect DHT and hair loss.

finasteride should help your hairloss. I would say the earlier you get on it the better. As for lifting weights, they will definitely increase DHT levels thereby accelerating hairloss(only if ur already susceptible obviously). This is what I believe although half the people on this site will disagree. Anyways, I still weight lift because I feel having a good body is as important as having hair.

How can you go around saying such false information and using words like definitely to back it up? First of all, lifting weights doesn't increase DHT levels. It TEMPORARILY increases testosterone levels, but the t levels go back down within a couple hours of completing the exercises. This won't have an effect on hair loss because the high t levels are not sustained.

Steroids can increase hair loss in people because the higher test levels last much longer.

So please don't go around telling people that hair loss will definitely increase DHT levels and accelerating hair loss. Please don't become like biglemoncoke and spout your own unproven opinions as fact.

Silvhair, it's perfectly fine to lift weights. As long as you aren't using steroids in conjunction then it won't accelerate your hair loss. The only way that they possibly could by themselves would be if you were lifting 20 hours a day every day, and no one does this.

Serum testosterone has been shown to increase by up to 40% after weight training, but as I said, this is just a temporary increase. Some exercises like swimming actually show a temporary decrease in testosterone levels.

So, overall, short term exercises like weight training can increase testosterone, but only temporarily, because you aren't lifting for hours upon hours every day.

I dont want to spread false information, and you are right I am not 100% positive that weight lifting will accelerate hair loss, but it is definitely a logical conclusion to draw. Weight lifting especially with heavy weights will increase growth hormone levels, testosterone levels, and DHT levels. I am also speaking from personal experience. I lost hair faster than anyone in my family, and Im the only one that has ever weightlifted. Also, if you look at pro bodybuilders and even dudes who are pretty big in the gym, a LOT of them seem to be bald. And Im sure not all of them use steroids. This is just my opinion not trying to spread false info.

Most bodybuilders who are bald either a) shave their head, b) are on steroids, or c) would bald anyway even without bodybuilding.

It's not a logical conclusion to draw because the test levels only increase temporarily and go back down within a couple hours after conclusion of the exercise. I see plenty of guys at the gym who have a full head of hair and a lot of them keep their hair short because they don't want long hair all matted with sweat.

Rassmann is entitled to his opinion but most people on here and most other derms disagree with him.

Ok so if the test levels increase temporarily, it is very likely DHT levels increase temporarily too. Those temporary DHT levels will temporarily attack your hair follicles right?

Also increased muscle mass will lead to higher test levels. This is not temporary. This is why I think it is a logical conclusion to draw.

I don't think it's been proven that they increase. And for what it's worth, finasteride increases test levels as well but people still take that b ecause it reduces circulating DHT.

It isn't. Someone can explain it better than me though.

And I don't agree with your claims at all but even if they are somehow true, wouldn't you rather have slightly less hair and a ripped body than slightly more hair and out of shape?

Yeah I wish someone would do research about this stuff so I could set my mind at ease one way or another. I still workout and keep in shape, but Ive become less of a powerlifter now and am going for the more cut look. But I still do weights and cardio. Before hairloss, I used to pride myself on my lifts. :(

thanks for the reply's. I think I am going to start on finasteride.

Where do you think the most valuable place to get it is. Meaning the most reliable and best price, but without sacrificing quality and getting the right stuff.

I will continue working out either way. What ever happens I still want to have a muscular and shapely body. I play a lot of sports so i need to be fit and strong. I just hope that the finasteride works for me and that i don't have sides.
