New theory on what causes male pattern baldness...

It has come to my attention through constant observation that balding rates are much higher amongst men with paler skin. Practically every second guy in Scandinavia or Britain is balding and balding fast. Balding is by and large a caucasian male issue. If you look at black African men or even latino men the balding rates are MUCH less. I dare say even rare. So I therefore postulate that male pattern baldness is related to melanin in the skin. Men with darker skin have developed naturally darker skin over time to protect them from the hot sun in Africa. So sun exposure and recieving vitamin D from the sun was an everyday occurance and rarely an issue. But men in Europe don't get to see as much sunlight, their skin is pale and perhaps male pattern baldness developed over time due to a deficiency in vitamin D due to lack of sun exposure. Hence why men develop bald patches on the back of their heads. I mean think about it, men are standing up most of the time so their hair would block any chance the sun makes in its rare appearance in europe from hitting their pale sun deprived skin. So as a result of this men began to develop bald patches in a NW7 style fashion to act as a kind of sun dial to channel the precious sunlight for vital vitamin D production in a cloudy gloomy sunless Europe.

What you think?

Hmm, I don't think this theory can be right MHD, there are many darker skinned men with male pattern baldness, I just think genetics is the main factor, diet and other things can contribute but not skin colour.

white people
black people
people who have mixed parents
fat people
skinny people
religious people
non religious people

I don't think there is a statistically significant correlation with any group of males.

I have read that the contemporary man is more likely to bold than the previous generation due to more sedentary lifestyle we lead. So, if you think men around you are bolder than sub-Saharan Africans, that's mainly due to the lifestyle and not the race. Once the African changes his lifestyle and sits in front of a PC for most of the day, he is as likely to go bold as you are.

Any theory must be statistically proven, if not, it's just a talk.

"developed" ?

This is not even a theory because there are not any correct facts in it to support what it proposes.

It is wierd.....when I go though Amsterdam airport, I "seem" to notice many more balding men than when I travel in the US major airports...just an observation. :dunno:

I think by "developed" he means "evolved."
Well metalhead claims he has a degree from "Harvard" and does not accept evolution, instead believes in literal creation, he also stated that dark people were created by god because of sin, so I don't know why he now thinks it has something to do with the sun? :dunno: :dunno: :smack:

You mean New Amsterdam :) ?

I've been to north, south, east, and west Europe and I don't think one part of Europe is balding more than the rest. There might be some regional differences due to a certain gene being more prominent in the given area, but it has nothing to do with race or the region itself.

However, I think it was in wikipedia, Greek men are supposed to have the highest percentage of baldness in the whole world. Greeks being a Mediterranean and sun loving nation, and darker in skin colour than the northern Europeans goes to show that this theory is completely pointless.

Fair-skinned people of northern European descent don't necessarily have deficiencies of vitamin D due to less sunlight. Fair skinned people start to synthesize vitamin D much faster and with less sun exposure than dark-skinned sub-Saharan Africans for example.

This subject does bring up another question. Isn't the primary purpose of hair to keep in body heat? So why would northern Europeans evolve in an extremely cold climate and yet lose the hair on their head that might be crucial to retaining bodyheat?

Anyway, I think a much better theory is that people with male pattern baldness have latent homosexual tendencies. Most gay dudes that I see are bald.

This is true I read this as well :agree:

Greek men also have the highest rate of body hair and body hair is usually a sign of high dht levels, so go figure :dunno:

However Africans and Asians are pretty much hairless. Lower dht? More melanin?

Im just throwing some things out there...

You become 'homosexual' socially, don't think biology has anything to do with it.

On the subject - could it be because of the climate change? I happen to constantly observe balding people at airports as well. Perhaps they travel a lot? I have a friend who started to go bald after moving from Colombia to Scotland.

Also, I've seen A LOT more balding people in England than in Eastern Europe.

well.. it's a known fact that westerners are more comfortable and less physically active than the rest of the world. Also, it is a known fact that the more physically active men can delay getting bold. So the moral of the story is, we didn't evolve to sit in front of the PC.

I had some back problems long time ago, nothing serious, the doctor told me I'm biologically not designed to sit in front of the PC and that I should make an effort to exercise or be physically involved at least an hour a day. Since then my body has changed a lot, I think I'm more aware of he said and I'm as active as I can be.

It is?

Well, it is written in lots of places, so I presume it is statistically proven??

It has something to do with DHT hormone levels. If you are healthy and exercise regularly, you are more likely to have regular level of DHT. It doesn't necessarily mean it stops hairloss, but it can slow it down a bit.

there is a definite link between insulin and androgens, so it would make sense that warding off insulin resistance and diabetes via exercise could be beneficial for hair loss.

Is it not true that Native Americans have the lowest rates of balding? I've noticed (in my informal research checking out people's heads while riding the subway each morning) that Latino guys are rarely balding... I've wondered if this is due to the same Native American genes.
