Okay, I'm currently 20 years old and my doctor recently confirmed that I have started losing my hair due to the disappearance of hair follicles in my frontal region. I went to the doctor to double check seeing as I noticed hairs appearing on my hand in the shower etc, when previously I would never really get any hairs coming out in this manner. On top of this, I noticed the disappearance almost immediately after I last bleached my hair blonde (leaving the bleach in longer than normal), and wanted to check that the hair loss was not product related. Nevertheless, my doctor was confident that my hair loss is gene related (and I have to admit I have noticed gaps appearing in my hairline as the hairs become less numerous which I imagine is general practice fo male pattern baldness). Despite my dad having a really good head of hair at 57, I found out that it seems highly likely I have inherited the relevant genes of my mum's side of the family (my uncle started losing his hair early).
I got him to check the crown and back of my head, and he didn't seem to think there was any sign of me losing hair in this region. Yet his advice for me was to maybe consider Regaine, however, having read around a bit on here it seems to me that this is really only effective for replacing hair on top of you head, rather than dealing with the immediate hairline...?
Ever since I was really young, I've always had a high hairline (similar to my father's), that's been raised at the temples to give that 'M' shaped appearance, so I have found it hard to clock the extent to which my hair is really moving back. So although I'd probably only be about at the NW2 stage, to other people a closer look at my hairline may look as if I've actually been losing my hair for a lot longer. It's worrying to say the least. If going bald is 100m, I feel like I'm starting my race 20-30 metres in.
So I'm just looking for some advice on where to go next. I'm apprehensive about commiting to any form of minoxidil until I next get my haircut (allowing easier application), but also questioning whether I should start using it on top of my head already even if there is no easily noticeable form of thinning? Can minoxidil be effective in frontal regions? Is there anything I can do to combat the 'greasier' feel of my temples of late? Was bleaching my hair the trigger for this hair loss, if not the genetic cause? Will this compound my eventual hair loss? How safe is Propecia? Should I wait and see how my hairline develops over the next few months or get started on some form of product straight away?
As I'm sure many people on here can relate to, coming up against this sort of hurdle so young is a bit of a shock. The fact that I'm not even close to a full body of facial hair yet is a further kick in the teeth. It's becoming increasingly apparent to me that I've inherited the worst of both worlds: my dad's natually high hairline, but my uncle's propensity to lose it at a young age. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
