Hello,
I am looking for advice for a better concealer system. Here is some background.
I am a middleage white man with almost black hair who had multiple hair transplant procedures almost 20 years ago. Over the last 10 years, most of the "original" hair on my crown has disappeared, leaving me with so-so coverage from the transplants. Despite traveling cross country to see one of the "leading experts" at the time, my head does look pluggy. Down the road I may consider corrective surgery. For the last few years I have been trying various concealers to give me the coverage I want without the pluggy look. I started using dermmatch, but was not happy with the unnatural look it gave me. I then discovered Toppik which I have been using for a few years. Toppik gives me great coverage, and my wife was blown away. I have had some problems/complaints with it though.
First, it takes me a long time, sometimes 10+ minutes to put it on. I have tried simply shaking it out the original container, and their old and new applicator. I have a large bald spot on my crown that is awkward for me to get to. I also need to make sure that it looks natural back there.
Second, my wife says my hair stinks afterwards, whether or not I use the Toppik hold spray.
Third, it is messy both in terms of application (my sink is covered with a coating of black fibers) and my pillow. I finally bought a black pillow case, which helps the later a lot. I also see black on the inside of my baseball caps.
Fourth, I have to be careful that I don't leave the house with a blob or smear of black on my forehead.
Fifth, it can be a bit expensive, over the long run. This is not as big an issue and yes, I realize it is nothing compared to transplants.
A few months ago I discovered Hollywood Instant Hair. It was so cheap compared to Toppik I ordered three cans. HIH seems to have thicker/larger fibers that when applied correctly makes me look 20 years younger. The results were amazing. The problem is that HIH is even messier than Toppik. It also does not work well with the Toppik applicators (it clogs them after a little while).
Now I have discovered there are other alternatives like Nanofibers. Can anyone give me guidance as to the best product for someone with course, curly hair? Also, what is the best/easiest way to apply it? One challenge is that my pale white scalp stands out against my jet black hair.
Does anyone know of better applicators that will work with HIH?
Thanks in advance for reading this long post and any answers you may provide.
