I also posted this in the Tellyourstory section to, but didn't get a whole lot of replies; I know that ultimately it is my decision what I do, but I wanted to make an informed decision predicated somewhat on the experiences of others in addition to what I gut tells me so......
My situation is that I have been on rogaine foam 5% for about 10 months, I also tried the liquid as well. Despite the fact that my skin was flaking and I had a chronic itch, I continued to use it, my skin was even worse with the liquid. Had a consult with Dr. Feller and he told me that more than likely me applying the rogaine was making me lose more hair due to a type of rogaine dermatitis that some patients experience. He said that because my hair looks uniform on top and my hairline looks no different from the top of my head(the area where I was applying it), rogaine was probably not doing anything for me; to make a long story short, he recommended that I stop using it. However, I know people assert that rogaine can maintain hair too. I have some questions:
1.) If Rogaine was causing severe flaking/itching, is it possible that I was still benefitting from it at all?
2.) Has anyone successfully went off of Rogaine for similar reasons and not underwent a significant shed?
3.) What ingredient in both minoxidil formulations were probably causing the itching and flaking, could it have been the minoxidil itself?
4.) Are there any other minoxidil solutions with different ingredients in addition to the minoxidil that I might be able to tolerate better?

I use Nizoral and although it reduced the flaking and alleviated the itching a little, I still got it nevertheless.....

Please help.........
PEACE.

1) Of course. Rogaine liquid contains Minoxidil, Alcohol, Propylene Glycol and Water Purified. Propylene Glycol and Alcohol cause itching and flaking. Some people are more sensitive than others. Itching and flaking do not affect effectiveness of Rogaine.

2) Can't say. Everyone seem to react differently but I believe that if you didn't regrow much hair most likely you won't go through big shed.

4) YES!!! You should defiantly try Dr. Lee minoxidil.

rcom pretty much nailed it on the head. I honestly don't know anyone, including myself, that has not experienced itching-flaking-dandruff with minoxidil 5%. Dr. Feller was way off to tell you to stop rogaine in my opinion. It's basic knowledge that it causes flaking and irritation. When i was on minoxidil I actually stopped the flaking when I added nizoral2% shampoo to my regime.

Continue taking it. Waiting to go bald and THEN starting would be fruitless. Prevent it.

Still conflicted...Dr. Bernstein recommended I try a 2% solution because in some cases, people are actually allergic to the minoxidil itself, so maybe I'll tolerate it at a lower concentration. I'm thinking of trying this until I can complete my medical Hx and send it to Dr. Lee; what do you all think about that?

2% minoxidil is approximately the same as applying 1/2 of 1ml of 5% solution.
