I am a 37 year-old male being prescribed 1mg propecia for one full calendar year. I don't have male pattern baldness nor does it run in the family. I went to the dermatologist because my hair was very greasy and brittle and when I washed it, I noticed a lot of hair in my hands, then in my hat, and occasionally on my pillow at night. The dermatologist did the necessary blood work to rule out thyroid disease and checked my testosterone levels. She called a week later and told me all the test came back normal and that my hair loss was due to dermatitis on the scalp. She prescribed me a special kind of shampoo and Propecia, 1mg/day for one year.

I guess I want to know if this drug is safe to use? I've heard the horror stories from other forums how users of this drug ended up with erectyle dysfunction or decreased libidos. How common is this? Are the %'s as low as most doctors claim or is it in fact much higher? Will it be permanent or temporary?

The other major question I have is this so-called Propecia "shedding" that no doctor seems to talk about. Is it going to shed unaffected hair on the scalp or just the hair that's loose and going to fall out anyway? I don't want bald spots all over my head. I even have hair starting to come back in the spot I lost it.

I guess those are my major concerns. Maybe I'm just poking around the internet too much and I'm working myself up over nothing. I just don't want to take something if it could have disastrous consequences.

Thanks.

If you don't have male pattern baldness, there is no reason you have to take Propecia.

I'd question why you need to take propecia? if you don't have male pattern baldness? Use a shampoo containing NO sodium sulphate.
