Need advice on a hairpiece or wig

Hi everyone,

I've been balding since my early 20s. I'm now in my 30s, and it's pretty much far too gone to try and get it back with propecia and that type of thing. Though I do use an Asian shampoo that has restored some hair to a "peace fuzz" level.

The thing is, I'm just looking for advice on getting a good looking hairpiece or wig fitted. I just want my dignity back. I'm too young looking to really pull off the balding look. I look rather like I'm a chemo therapy patient or something.
And I have fair skin and burn easily, so I really need some protection other than hats, so it's a health issue as well as a cosmetic one.

I'm in California btw. My problem is I have a very large noggin, around 24 inches around, so it's hard to find decent hats that fit my scalp. Does anyone have any advice on getting a hairpiece fitted that looks really good and professional?

I know there are some that you can't tell the difference between that and natural hair (a la Ted Danson's), and there are others that look like a poodle retired on the head, lol. What is the first step? Where do I go, what types of places fit them for the scalp?

I want something fairly simple. A membership in a "hair system" seems a bit complex. Does anyone have any advice? People call me "vain" for wanting my hair back, but that seems a bit disingenuous coming from people with full heads of hair. Sometimes I think about just shaving it all off if not for the fair skin issue.

Hi Hairwhere; I am about the same age as you, and have been wearing a lace piece now for about 3 years. I have been really pleased with it, and feel it has resolved my hairloss issues. It is completely undetectable to see and nearly to touch. I have never been busted since I started wearing these lightweight lace pieces.

Your aim should be to get to the point where you can buy your own hairpieces on the Internet and do your own maintenance. That way you can wear fresh good-looking hair for a reasonable price and you are in control of your own look. You can do that from the get go. But if you have the money, it is not a bad idea to start by getting a reputable hairpiece salon to order your first hairpieces and show you the ropes of the maintenance process. Luckily you are living in the hairpiece-wearing capital of the world, so there is plenty of choice. One place that gets good reviews is F&T Hair Design at Los Feliz (http://www.beachcalifornia.com/srca/bea ... -1014.html) - don't know if that is anywhere near you.

Definitely DONT go to a "hair club" type of establishment. They are wildly overpriced and the hairpieces are trash. If you only remember one thing from this post, let that be it.

If you want to go DIY from the outset, you need to choose your supplier, then make a template of your baldspot, then choose a base material and the design of the piece you want, then sit back for a couple of months and wait for it to arrive. Then you need to find someone to cut it in, and you're ready!

I have fallen foul of the mods for mentioning actual suppliers by name, so I won't do that, but drop me a PM if you want some recommendations or other help.

Thanks so much, this is exactly what I was looking for. I need a hair salon/piece type of place that will fit a piece on my head and give me advice on how to manage it to get me going. I know that if I made a template at first, I'd make a right mess of it, without knowing the basics.
