My hair loss due to something else..?

Hi guys,

I know you people have a lot knowledge and information and I could do with your help.

Basically I am 26 and started suffereing diffusing hairloss from the age of 20. I have had diffusing hairloss, which has caused hairloss mainly on the top, sides and crown (mainly), I also have slight thinning at the back.

I started on minoxidil when I was 21 and have always used it every other day. More recently about 9 months ago I purchased generic proscar from QHI UK and have been taking 1/4 pill every night, I also started using tricomin, but I have not been able to stop my hairloss, the proscar hasn't done anything, im still losing hair. Shall I stop proscar, I cant still be shedding, right?

Do you think that my hairloss may be due to something else, could it be dandruff? I suffer from that quite badly, and use T-GEL but still got it. I have seen and read lots people haveing success I was hoping I would be one of those, but looks like not.

Any information and advice would be welcome.At this moment I'm just lost as to what to do next, maybe hair restoration is my last chance.

Hey Raul,

why don´t you see a dermatologist and get some bloodwork done? If you are thinning on the sides as well then you have a chance that it is not male pattern baldness. So it is no surprise that Finasteride didn´t help you out.

Against your dandruff you might use Nizoral shampoo, maybe it helps. Good Luck!

Mate, the important thing is not not how much you shed but whether it grows back, in the past nine months has your hair improved, gotten worse, or stayed the same? And it's generally said that you should wait a year on finasteride to weigh up the benefits.

Also, QHI as far as I could tell don't sell generic proscar, they sell genuine Merck proscar, you sure it's generic?

You may also want to consider using the minoxidil every day twice, I'm not really sure whether using it every other day would have much of an effect, but seeing as the trials done on it used it every day twice, you should too. If it's because of how it makes your hair look then you should use the foam instead.

It's important to think about your family history of hair, because that will pretty much conclude for you whether it's male pattern baldness or not, and using nizoral will definatly help you as Taugenichts suggested!

I think seeing a dermatologist is probably a good idea. As for my family history, Some of my family members have hairloss while others dont. like one of my brothers is suffering diffuse thinning like me but the other brother isn't. My father is 50 and still has a decent amount of hair, but his brother has hairloss. Some of my uncles (mother side) also have hairloss while others dont.

As for my dandruff, I have had that for over 10 years now, Although I have used some medicated shampoos none seem to work.For instance I wash my hair with them and I still end up with a flaky dry scalp. Although I must say that the visible flakes do decrease. But it just doeant completely go.

There is very little evidence that finasteride use "stops" hairloss in most users. In fact a majority report a simple reduction in their hairloss or simply an overall improvement of the look of their hair. Therefore, perhaps the issue is not whether you have male pattern baldness and/or whether you are a "non-responder" to the drug, but whether your expectations were set too high. I would try to find some camparison photos to compare the look of your hair before and after finasteride use.
It is impossible to rule out that you may be experiencing Telogen Effluvium, however IMP it is unlikely as Telogen Effluvium is very rare and typically subsides with time. Either way, I suggest going to your derm.
