Hi , I started a course of minoxidil and finesteride back in 2009 ( at the age of 47) from which I achieved great success .
I was receding at my temples and had a bit of loss on the crown but after 3 months my hair was back to its best , both in volume and quality .
In June 2018 I listened to some bad advice and came of the finesteride and when minoxidil only . This initially didn’t seem to have any adverse affects but when nov/dec arrived I started to dramatically shed , the volume was dropping off and it became very noticeable around the temple areas again .
I got myself back onto my consultant and strarted on the finesteride again . I am now 3 and a half months into it and although the shedding has stopped and there has been signs of regrowth on the temples the hair seems to be very fine and will not grow in length on my fringe , it seems to have stopped around 1 inch , my hair also seems to have lost its quality texture and is quite frizzy , especially on the fringe .
Has anyone else had a similar experience to this , does anyone know if finesteride does not work as well after a sustained break of use .
I’m really mad at myself for coming off it , I only have to look back at photos to pre me coming off the medication and look in the mirror now , a massive difference .

I will be very happy to have 0.1 inch of temples when I hit 56
I understand and appreciate what you’re saying but I had a full head of normal hair with my original medication so it’s all relative really , my hair has deteriorated since I altered that medication.
Don’t ever change a winning formula.

There is a graph I remember looking at from a study awhile ago. One of the groups in the study was specifically tested for their response to on/off/on of finasteride. From what I remember, it was on 1 or 2 years, off for some time and then back on again. In general, that group did regrow hair but not as much as the group that was consistently on finasteride during that same time. I will try and find that study and post it here later if you don't find it.

Thanks, that’s very helpful .
I stayed on it full time for 8 years , no side effects , my hair was full and good quality.
I’ve been advised that it should return the same if I’m patient and give it 6 months but I can just tell something is different.
The hair is growing but not in the same volume or quality.

Here's the graph from that study. I enlarged it a little to see it better. It is possible for propecia to reverse miniaturization as you should have noticed at the start of using it. Hopefully the same happens again this time. Our hair cycles so slowly so you have no choice but to wait it out and wish for the best.

The graph shows it took years before leveling up to the people who were consistently on propecia from the beginning.
+38 vs. +30 from baseline which is not bad at all considering that full year of taking a placebo.

There are a lack of studies on this for obvious reasons. It would be appreciated if you could report back from time-to-time to update us with your situation. Thanks.

According to my knowledge it will grow back. But it could also be that it lost its efficacy independent of your break.

It lost efficacy for me after 10 years..fortunately Avodart became available. All good so far.

Stopping it because of worrying side effects is fine, but because of somebodies else's advice is really bad.

I am also using Trinov with microneedling. I hope for synergies. But I would never give up Avodart in order to try other treatments to see if they are more effective.

Thanks , advice I got was about the side effects and I let it get into my head , I’m sure with patience it will return but I quite agree it may be down to loos in efficiency.
I’ve never heard of avodart but will investigate it .
