One of the best hair transplant drs in Michigan recently sent out a mail letter to all his patients saying that in his experience, many of his patients have experienced better results on Proscar than Finasteride... advising us to switch if we wish.

He's a very reputable Dr but I thought Proscar and Finasteride were the same thing as each other, as well as Propecia? What's going on here??

BTW, I never got a hair transplant because I wasn't a good candidate... my donar hair was "too thin" so now I just take Finasteride 1/5 to maintain.

Same drug, Proscar is 5mg, Propecia is 1MG

I take proscar and cut it in 1/4's so i get 1.25 mg on finasteride a day

If it's the same drug, just wondering why finasteride and Pros have different names? Also, why would my Doctor say one is better than the other?? It makes no sense to me.

Your Dr does not have a clue!

Propecia = 1mg finasteride

Proscar = 5mg finasteride

They are both finasteride but differ in dose.

Maybe he wants you to increase your dose?? Also, its known that a low dose is just as effective as a higher dose.

Yea but what about this:

Propecia = 1mg finasteride
Proscar = 5mg finasteride
Finasteride = 5mg finasteride????

If finasteride is 5mg of finasteride, why is Proscar (which is also 5mg finasteride) called Proscar???? There must be some difference.

This is what happened here:

This guy never talked to a Doctor, he just wanted to ask which is better and didn't want to reveal that he was pretty clueless on the subject so he just made up a story about talking to a doctor instead.

To the topic starter..

Proscar is just a brand name of Finasteride. What you've said is the same thing as saying "my stylist said Levi's are better than jeans".

Proscar is finasteride son..

finasteride = proscar = propecia = finasteride

1mg finasteride = propecia = 1/5th proscar

and so on...........

its all the same........

fincar = finpecia =proscar = propecia = finasteride

just different doses and some are generic.....

Well, 5 mg/day would be expected to be slightly more effective than 1 mg/day, but I really doubt that any doctor would be able to notice such a difference just by casual observation of the patients in his practice.

as others have pointed out - it's the same stuff, just different names and doses

5mg = Proscar, Fincar
1mg = Propecia, Finpecia, Finasteride
