At 1st glance, you would think that my son has a great head of hair, complete with lightning strike, which he gets from his Mother. She went gray in her teens.

Because of this early gray, I had hoped my son had inherited his Mother’s hair, which he would hang onto, no problem.

Now I’m not so sure.

He has a floppy hairstyle, but when you brush his hair back, he’s definitely receding and thinning at the crown.

His Mother and I noticed this a couple of months ago and my Son is aware too, as he’s asked me ‘when did you go completely bald’?

The colour drained from his face when I said 26.

It was terrible. I don’t want this for my son.

How can I help him keep what he has?

Thanks.

You should post before(any perceived hairloss with the hairline showing) and after pics. If it's not noticeable in a picture comparison, then you should really go to a derm that specializes in hairloss to run checks/test for miniaturization.

I don’t have any comparison pics tbh and I know you don’t keep the hairline you had as a child after puberty but the kid knows himself he’s receding.

Thanks for the advice anyway.

It’s seems when you start on minoxidil, you’re on it for life.

I know he’s young, but same thing happened to me at same age.

Thanks for your input.

Hopefully he doesn’t lose much in the next year or two and then he can get on finasteride. Finasteride works for a vast majority of people in maintaining what they have for MANY years. I’m 23 and on it for about a year and haven’t noticed much change in my hair. I also don’t have ANY side effects.

I’m curious about how your life was balding in your early 20s and how you handled it mentally?

I’ve thought about topical finasteride for him.

I’d say given he’s at peak testosterone producing age, it’s not helping.

How was it for me?

Terrible!

I had frizzy, curly hair, which looked terrible anyway.

I should have shaved it earlier than I did.

I actually look better without hair...lol.

But at the time, mentally and confidence wise it was terrible.

Life is hard enough at that age without having to deal with hair loss as well.

I wish my dad has the same amount compassion as you do becasue my dad just seems to find it almost funny that I've inherited his hairloss at a young age when everyone on my mothers side has great hair all in their fifties!

I feel your pain and I remember how distressing it was.

My Dad is 80 and has more hair than me.

I’ve know idea where my hair loss came from and it’s not like I had frail hair as a kid.

Unfortunately I’ve passed the susceptibility to hair loss onto my son.

I’m devastated by it and don’t find it funny at all.
