My Grandson has lost all of the hair on the top of his head within two months, it is the most devastating thing that we have ever experienced. The doctor has given him a cortisone injection and he has a couple of hairs coming out but not much. Is there a place somewhere in Florida that specializes in help for children suffering from this horrible thing?

Hello, sorry that your grandson is having this awful problem. I would recommend Bauman Medical in Boca Raton if you can make it down there. You can visit their website at baumanmedical.com or call them at 561-394-0024. I am not associated with them, but know they are good from the documentation and videos I have seen from them.

In many cases, this condition (alopecia areata) is only temporary and his hair will return after 6 months to even a couple of years later (I am pretty sure he has alopecia areata, but I am no expert). I recommend a multivitamin (such as any gummy multivitamin) as well as the drink Ensure. I have been drinking Ensure for years, it has every vitamin and mineral needed (unlike typical multivitamins), and tastes good if refrigerated. Lack of Vitamin D as well as other vitamin and minerals has been shown to worsen alopecia areata in people prone to it. Next, I would have him take Cetirizine (brand Zyrtec) 10mg to see if that helps. Antihistamines have been used for alopecia areata with success before and are safe for children. If Cetirizine does not produce any results after one month, quit Cetirizine and try Loratadine (brand name Claritin) for a month.

On top of that, I would ask either a doctor, dermatologist, or hair restoration specialist for 0.1% betamethasone valerate foam. Betamethasone valerate has been shown to be one of the most effective topical corticosteroid for alopecia areata. You can see that in the "Topical Corticosteroid" section here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3149478/ the link also contains some other treatments for alopecia areata, but not all can be used in children. Everything I wrote can be used by an 11 year old safely. I would start with trying those things, and if they do not work, you can try things such as Anthralin and Diphencyprone. Good luck.

Did you ever find out the problem? It was a fungal infection wasn't it? You can tell by the little black dots.

At his age kids won’t recognize or care about a wig. Get him one ASAP so he can feel like a normal kid again
