Wow this sucks man. I had no idea it was so bad to have a few extra pounds.

"Hair loss is a sign that there is something wrong in the body. It seems to be one clear risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease."

I wonder what blondeguy would say of this statement.

To me it sounds like complete bullshit, because 50% of men are balding by the time they're 50 so i guess 50% of the population is otherwise 'weak' to put into simple terms. I'm also not 100% clear on what she's saying....Is she saying that if you're bald BUT have a good lifestyle and are slim then you're still healthy and that only FAT bald men have increased risk? OR that ALL bald men whether healthy or not have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease?

I'm still not seeing the rationale behind the statement....HOW is baldness linked to cardiovascular disease? Since *so many* people are bald you cant just take 4000 and then link cardiovascular diseases to the bald ones, it can just be a statistical anomaly. Then again correlation is not causation.

This researcher is just a student.

The comments on the impact of hair loss to men's social life are just opinion. Hardly fitting for research.

Guys: From all I've read since starting to learn about male pattern baldness, heart disease is more prevalent in balding men. It's something that, from what I've read, has been known for a LONG time.

I didn't read the linked report in the above post, but i hate to say that we are more prone to heart disease. male pattern baldness sufferers are more subject to plaque build up in the arteries and a general stiffening of the arteries.

Some medical people say it might be our inflammatory reaction to DHT. But I don't know how accurate they are in saying that. Maybe Bryan would know more about this?

Now I ain't no doctor but, again, from what I've read, we are more prone to heart disease.

Atherosclerotic heart disease and a more than 3-fold incidence of
heart attacks seem to be associated with severe pattern loss
. This suggests some co-variable. My favorite is that damage to the lining of the blood vessels, etc. decreases the amount of nitric oxide ( NO, as in miNOxidil ) the lining produces. NO has multiple messenger functions. Two of which seem to be 1) stimulating hair follicles and 2) keeping blood vessels open and
dialated.

I don't think this theory has much credibility at all.

By this logic a moderately overweight man who is completely bald would have a higher risk of heart disease than a vastly overweight man with a full head of hair.

...or a slim 20 year old male with a NW3 who works out 4 times per week and eats very well has a higher risk of heart disease than a slim 20 year old male with the exact same regime, but without any hair loss...

Being overweight definitely does affect risk of heart disease (and many other things...), but I don't think being bald on top of it would make you that much more susceptible to anything like that. Except maybe lower self esteem!
