This forum has been very helpful for researching treatments. I began losing my hair in June04. There is no history of baldness in my immediate family. mom and dad have had no problems i don't see any history with my grandfathers. grandmother doesnt have much hair but she is 96. I don't have any brothers or sisters. In June there was no scalp showing but I was losing tons of hair. My dad cuts my hair but he didn't see any change. My scalp started to peek thorugh by July and August. I began taking Propecia ( and using nizoral) in the beginnig of October and I would have been happy to keep what I had but it has not worked that well. My hairloss has slowed down a little but you can see my scalp at the top and front but the sides and back are very thin too. I have heard of cases where people "go bald overnight" hyper something or other and I am guessing that is the type of progression I have . I assume others have experienced this? I had hoped the Propecia would have allowed me to a least "maintain" for a year or two or more especially since I cught it pretty early.
well the forum has at least given me some good info.... very tough times

Hi.
Here are some things we should discuss here:

"[...]but the sides and back are very thin too"

The back and the sides are NOT affected by male pattern baldness. Strange !

"There is no history of baldness in my immediate family"

Strange again. What you think you have is also called alopecia androgenetica !

I would definately recommend too see a in order doctor to check whether there are other reasons for your hairloss (thyroid disorder, malnutrition, ....)

In 95% it is male pattern baldness but the points you mention require some more testing in my opinion.

Good luck !

If you began losing hair in June and had your scalp at the crown showing by July, it probably was not caused by simple male pattern baldness. The fact that your immediate family has no history of baldness would also indicate that this hair loss might not be male pattern baldness. How much scalp could you see? Are you sure it's not just the "swirl" that everyone has back there? I too would recommend you see a doctor and ask for blood tests to rule out other causes (nutritional, thyroid, etc.). Even if this hair loss isn't caused by male pattern baldness, getting on finasteride is probably a good move - better safe than sorry. You might also try a topical solution like minoxidil (or wait for Adenogen, as it sounds like that might be significantly more effective). The bonus of minoxidil is that it's not a DHT blocker, but a hair growth stimulator. With hair loss as rapid as yours, the hair should grow back - using minoxidil could help it grow back faster.

How is your hairline? Has it recessed, or are you seeing a general thinning over your whole head? Lots of people, male pattern baldness or not, have some scalp showing through at the crown.

Good luck![/i]

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of trying Dr. Lee's minoxidil to see if that will help. My hairline has not moved back a whole lot. I have a lot of forehead showing even without any hairloss issues. The portion of my scalp showing is hard to describe. It isn't the circle pattern that appears in the back of the head and it isn't the "W" shape either. I suppose it would be more of the diffuse type. I'll check in with a doctor and see if there is anything unusual going on. Thanks again.

Not just a regular doctor - see a specialist. A regular doctor will just look at your hair and go "oh I see you lose your hair" and then look male pattern baldness up in a book and then prescribe you Propecia. See a derm. or something.

Don't go any further with treatments - stay on Finasteride and nizoral - but not Dr. Lee or any other supplemental products yet. See a derm. first.
