"Miracle cure for baldness"

Just heard that as a promo on TV for a show on channel 5 at 11PM (in one hour).

LOL.. this should be good.

I think it's a show about cosmetic surgery, so I think they're just going to show a hair transplant.

We'll see!

My god.. that was horrible. I don't know much about transplants, but this was gruesome!!!!

They had this guy put a balloon under his scalp (in a non-male pattern baldness area) and progressively 'inflate' the balloon over a span of weeks/months. Then he goes into a 3 hour surgery where the increased skin area over the balloon is cut off (one large piece, maybe 3 inches by 3 inches) and attached to the front of his head.

Ah well, I can't really explain it.

I've seen something like that.
I want my hair and all, but there are some things I just won't do. That's one of them.

Hmmm....sounds like that program took a step back to the 1800's and it's ideals about health:( That sounds seriously, very barbaric! :freaked2: :freaked:

Its called the "Fleming/Meyer Flap" technique and it was popular in the mid-90s. It produced nice results - when it worked.

The thing about it was the flap would remain partially connected to where it was sliced off, and then sewn on top of existing bald flesh. Well about 10-30% of the time, the flap would not have sufficient blood supply, causing it to die and rot. So those patients were left with a huge chunk of decaying flesh sewn to the front of their head. The only cure then was a skin graft, which often left a very bad visual result, so those patients had to get a toupee to cover up their mess of a head.

When it did work, the results were impressive. Much thicker than a hair transplant. But the hairline was usually too dense, making it un-natural looking in some patients. Lots of people opted to then get a small hairline traditional hair transplant to get that looking more natural.

Im suprised you guys havent heard about it, but then again, Ive been losing my hair since 1994, Ive kept up on that stuff a lot.

I heard about it Thinning. It was one of those treatments that kept me an EXTREME skeptic relative to all hair loss remedies. I know it worked for some but alot of people did end up with dead flesh.

In fact it made me even more of a skeptic, which I would have thought was impossible at the time, relative to where science was regarding hair loss. (It was that type of procedure, coupled with all the snakeoil treatments I'd seen in my life, that clouded my judgment of legitimate treatments that came later.)

I probably missed out on 5 to 10 years of legitimate male pattern baldness treatments because of that skepticism.

I remember talking to my brother (a Norwood 7) about it and we laughed and said "another piece of sh** remedy"! But you're right, it worked for some men.

Btw, we weren't laughing at the men with dead flesh, we were ANGRY!

You hit the nail on the Head old Baldy
once you have been taking by one snake oil, you tend to think its all snakeoil
If only i was more educated back in 97 when propecia came out in New Zealand and i started thinning, i might still be a norwood 2 with a little thinning reather then a nw4
