Background: I`m a 27yo male, with no family history of hair loss, but I noticed a fair amount of thinning about 6-8months ago (never really noticed it before then) I saw a derm 2months ago and he diagnosed me with male pattern baldness, he did sugest I take a blood/thyroid test, but I never did since i never noticed anything else weird besides hair thinning..
I started generic 5% Rogaine about 2 months ago and I shedded quite a bit for about 6 weeks with heavy dandruff...Nizoral stopped the dandruff and now I noticed that the shedding has also completely stopped (knock on wood) when I wake up I only see maybe 1-5 hairs on my pillow where there were easily 12-20 before, also I can shampoo and only a few hairs come out....
...And I`m not sure if it's my imagination or what, but my hair does seem a bit thicker and I can style it again without seeing big spots of my scalp...So basically I would say the minoxidil seemed to work pretty good for me...(I really hope I don't jinx it by posting this)....(My hair still is no where near what it was a year ago, but it is better than what it was 2months ago)..
The only problem is that the stuff is a hassle to apply, and I'd like to switch to proscar, how exactly do I do this? Do I start taking the proscar and then taper down the rogaine? Or do I just stop? Or should I not push my luck at this point, and just stay on the generic rogaine for awhile? I was hoping that I could at least cut down the rogaine to one application a day, (at night after a shower)...Anyone have advice on this. I'd rather not use the 15% minoxidil that is available since it's exspensive...I can get generic 5% at $25 for three bottles....Plus I`m just not sure about minoxidil at such a high concentration..

Take both at once sweetie. Stopping the minoxidil will be definitely a bad thing if you're seeing improvements.

if ur hair situations not that bad have ur hair cut short..say buzz cut but not a really short one and you should find the minoxidil really easy to apply and quick to dry.

Trust me...(check out my pics) You'll probably end up like me if you stop using what works. I stopped using minoxidil early on in 1987 because it was a "hassle". Huge mistake. (Huge if you don't want to be bald, that is) If you're like most guys, the DHT is acting on all the follicles on the top of your head and your hairs are slowly getting smaller and smaller. You just don't notice it until it's too late. You'll be kicking yourself in the *** in 10 yrs. If I only knew then what I know now...I might still have hair. sad. :(

Use both and add shampoo such as TGEL or Nizoral if you don't already use them.

Good luck

Cut back your minoxidil dose to 1 x per day if you must, but don't you dare stop using it! Proscar won't keep your minoxidil hairs. Getting on finasteride would also increase your odds of regrowth/maintenance, but you might wanna wait until you can judge the full benefits of minoxidil. You should hopefully see continued improvement over the next 6-10 months.

If the slow-drying is the problem for you, ya might wanna look into getting some of Dr.Lee's minoxidil (http://www.minoxidil.com). It dries very fast. I love de stuff!
