I do believe minoxidil is far more effective at maintaining than the propecia pushers will tell you. (I'm on Propecia, so don't bother telling me finasteride or bald.)

People saying it doesn't affect the fundamental balding process are erroneous. DHT isn't the only factor in balding, that's a fact. It grows hair, thus it obviously affects the process to some degree.
Too many people don't use it twice a day consistently, or get off because of a shed etc, it actually works pretty darn well. Comparing studies with finasteride it's not much different, finasteride is certainly easier to take though.
if you aren't obsessed with your hair like me I would stay off finasteride as long as possible, maybe avoiding it with future treatment ps if we're lucky. I take it myself and don't have bad sides but messing with hormones for hair is a ****ty situation.
