Minoxidil Q & A Sought From Experienced Users

Hi all,

Some sage and experienced advice from on here has put me off considering getting a hair transplant. For the next year or so at least.

I am Norwood 2 and have been on finasteride since age 21 (16 years ago). Now 37. My hair is stable and I find it hard to discern whether there has been any change since 21. In fact looking at older photos from ages 16/17 - it looks like I was norwood 2 then too.

Since reading on here I have seen lots of reports of minoxidil working. So I am considering using it.

Questions I am hoping people can provide experienced feedback on, from people who have experience using it:

1) Has it regrown hair on temples?

2) Does the hair actually grow to decent thick sized long and healthy hair or does it tend to remain as little weak bum fluff type hair?

3) How long to get results?

4) This is my main concern - is there a risk of it causing more balding to hair that is ok if you get the cream/foam on it? If so is there a way to avoid that?

5) What are the side effects? Have you experienced them or not?

6) Whats the best percentage concentration you have found for you?

7) I have noticed that it is very expensive over the counter. Is there a way that you can get a prescription cheaply for an off-brand product? I have done this with finasteride. Basically went from paying $95 a month to $8 a month.

Would be grateful for any experienced feedback on the above.

1) Yes, it has for me.

2) Mine has grown to decent thickness

3) Been using minoxidil for 3m12days

4) I experienced shedding in the beginning, aka looking more bald. But after that my hair just grew thicker for each day.

5) I wouldn't say that I've experienced any side effects.

6) I've only been using the 5% solution/2x day

7) I buy it off of Ebay for around $60/year. Can probably even find cheaper seller, considering I pay around $25 just for shipping. If you live in the US, you can most likely get it waaay cheaper.

@Alphalete thanks for the feedback sounds like your getting great results. Wow thanks for the Ebay tip. Thats cheap as. The shedding process sounds quite stressful. DId you find it stressful or was it only a very subtle change?

Well I looked like a Diffuse NW2 instead of just a NW2 back then. It lasted for about 2 weeks. I wore a cap so it wasn't that obvious. Although I did start with a completely shaved head. Maybe you could consider Toppik if it is too bothersome

Shiiit I dont like the sound of becoming a diffuse NW2. It sucks having such a public job sometimes. I wish I was a computer programmer and could just throw a hat on.

Yes, it looks infact like a NW2 or so. You've got really nice density. I feel like your hair is very good considering your age. For futher improvement, you can always try minoxidil and dermarolling for those bald areas. But if you feel like it's too much of a hassle, don't participate. Minoxidil creates an initial shed which might be troublesome for you. (Usually lasts for a month or so). Also, if you start, I recommend once/day. Twice is very annoying (atleast was for me) because it makes your hair look extremely greasy.

And do you recommand 1ml a day or 2ml a day then?

Thanks for the feedback. I side part usually. U had amazing results. I am planning to use minoxidil 5% on temples. Will that do any good?

Hmm. If you are 100% sure about religiously applying it, I'd go for it. But I recommend for you to hear out other people's opinions, and not make too hasty of a move.
