Minoxidil - is % the only thing that matters?

I have been using Mintop Forte 5% which is Minoxidil 5% + 63% alcohol + 32% water.

I was reading somewhere that alcohol would evaporate too fast leaving minoxidil on the scalp and not allowing it to penetrate. Therefore, Propylene Glycol is a much better vehicle. + alcohol is not too good for the skin anyway.

The minoxidil I apply does evaporate quite quickly leaving a white residue.

Is there any logic to these claims? Does it matter what the composition of the preparation is beyond the % of minoxidil?

I would love to hear experiences of people who have changed brands. Also any references to any studies/research.

i've used different brands from target, to walmart, to rogaine brand. i actually found the ones that dried out my scalp and got a little flaking/dandruff actually worked the best. this might be a coincidence, but this only happened with generics that i used between 2010 and 2011, it seems the newer formulas don't dry out your scalp as much, and i have not seen the regrowth that i had seen in prior years. maybe there is something to it. just my 5 cents

Thank God! I always get a white coating on my scalp when it dries. I use Mintop Forte which is 5% Min and rest 95% is 70% ethanol, i.e.

5% Minoxidil
67% ethanol
28% water
