minoxidil as a growth accelerator?

I can understand this.

What about this scenario though...

I'm responding well to finasteride at five months, but I'm getting really impatient for more results. I know that minoxidil will (probably) accelerate my progress.

In other words at eight months my hair might be as good as if I'd waited 18 months on finasteride alone.

If at eighteen months I pull the minoxidil, my hair can only get as bad as if I'd been taking finasteride alone, surely?

surely.. perhaps. But even non-male pattern baldness effected hair can become dependant on min.. so that'll shed away as well, with the exception that it will grow back in a few months.

Dear, Lord.

I don't understand people.

If you want to save your hair, you may have to make some commitments.

Commitment to minoxidil isn't hard. It could help you keep your hair.

Who cares if stopping minoxidil might make you lose hair? Don't stop!

The thing you have to remember is-- if you HADN'T taken it in the first place, you would have already lost that hair!

I hear whatcha sayin'....

However HairLossTalk.com and others recommend hanging back from minoxidil until finasteride has been given a year or so to work its magic alone, as one may find it unnecessary.

What I'm saying is that even if minoxidil is unnecessary to maintain an acceptable level of hair, it might be useful for a limited period to accelerate achieving the desired effect.

I don't see any reason not to use minoxidil.

1. It's clinically proven -- we're not talking snake oil here.
2. It's the cheapest proven treatment available.
3. If you stop, you're no worse off than if you had never started, except perhaps for a short-term shed, and even that's not proven.

If using it twice a day doesn't fit your schedule, use it once a day. Pretty much everyone can do that without it being a major inconvenience.

Thanks for your reply mpvsoft.

Whilst I appreciate your input, may I ask how long you've been using finasteride and minoxidil?

I have been using minoxidil for about 2-1/2 months. I have been using dutasteride (not finasteride) for about 1-1/2 months, since I found out about it. I went through an initial shed, but for the last three weeks or so not only has my shed subsided, but I lose much less hair now than I did before I started treatment. So I think I am responding well. It's still too early to know whether I'll see any regrowth.

Everyone responds differently, but I see no reason not to use minoxidil and dutaseride/finasteride at the same time. They do different things. Unless there are financial or schedule reasons that make it difficult to use minoxidil, if you use it, it can't hurt, it might help, and it won't cost much to find out. Within four months you should know whether minoxidil helps, since if you don't notice by then that you're at least retaining more hair, you probably aren't a responder to it.

minoxidil Menace - What if you use it as a 'growth accelerator'?

Thanks again mvpsoft.

Is there anyone with a year or more's experience of finasteride and minoxidil who can shed any light on this?

Specifically - has anyone been using finasteride and minoxidil for a period of six months or so, and subsequently dropped the minoxidil? And what has been the result?[/i]
